I laughed hard enough to spill my coffee also. Same as when I read $4k for the boat - figured the guy had a couple of zeros too many behind the "4"

Re: Found a great boat really cheap! but...

nematon,

If this boat is over in G basin on Bali, I know (well... have heard of it...)... Claimed by one of the office personnel as Naaaaasty inside, like gag reflex nasty... when they allowed the PO to remove personal effects...

If it really is this location, lien paperwork/title should not be a problem, just a little work... You should know that the marina is going to insist on a haul and an insurance survey before they would even consider letting the boat stay in the slip... $4k is instantly $5k, not including the mandatory items required by the survey to bring the boat to "acceptable risk" for insurance.... PLUS!!! All the things you may want to do when the boat is hauled... Bottom, through hulls, etc... +$1k-3K.... This does not include and "surprises"!

Just beware that a boat sold at lien has a 99% chance of maintenance neglect and you inherit all of the work and costs...

You should also note that NONE of those pictures of the boat is in it's current location... Landscape is not So. Cal...

Just in case you were interested in bumping up to 12.5k, there is a killer deal right there... There are buyers lined up for her, but we can put you on the list... (Inserting shameless plug here... )

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-a-153160.html

You could end up with a great little boat for $4k... Just know that it is going to be a lot of work and a lot more money ...

I thought that was why you moved to Mississippi where anything goes.
...

OP: I would echo everything above even tho the Ariel is a wonderful boat.

I've had a lotta boats but this time around I bought the exact boat I wanted at a higher price where someone else had already replaced the engine, installed a real elec system, frig, wind gen, water heater, etc. The stuff it did need is/was the stuff I can and actually like to do.

Re: Found a great boat really cheap! but...

Simple search on yachtworld:

26 ft 1971 Pearson 26 US$3,400
Lake Champlain, NY, United States
Boats R Fun
1971 Pearson 26 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

26 ft 1975 Pearson R/C US$2,500
Mobile, AL, United States
Turner Marine Yacht Sales, In
1975 Pearson R/C Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

26 ft 1974 Pearson US$3,900

Votes for satire are right on the money.

However, the guy is for real, and wants me to come look at the boat tomorrow.

I did post for 2 reasons.

1. to bring attention to the actual chain of title and serious nature of proof of ownership of a vessel. Especially at purchase time.

2. possibly to learn from others here about the nature of lien sales, title encumberences and other claims to vessel ownership that can be of consequence.

I am seriously looking for a good sailboat to use coastal around southern california.

I just finished reading a huge thread on another forum related to tow vs salvage, and ironically this boat shows up for sale, and the guy returns my call this morning.

reminds me of used car shopping in LA...
Well if you are interested in a Catalina 30 in Marina Del Rey let me know. My neighbor (his wife) has decided that with two kids and one on the way the boat has to go. If you are one of those people who joke about Benehuntalinas, never mind.
