Hey guys,
First time poster and I wanted to tap the knowledge of the group and get some ideas.
So I might be looking for a
boat for both cruising as well as a
liveaboard for me (30s
single dude with a medium sized dog and occasional girlfriend).
My background, I grew up on the
water on a
liveaboard in the
Pacific Northwest, sailed out of Bellingham and the like since I was in grade
school, been out of the
game for a little while but I am a professional pilot and seaplane pilot, little different but still nav, situational awareness, systems,
training for failures and all that jazz.
The
boat would be based out of
Alaska for the most part, though if I end up later just working seasonal (like having 7mo “off”) I’d like something I could go to some very far and very different places in. Add to that saving on rent with a $500ish slip beats
renting for 1k+ or
buying another home. Currently I have one house I’m
renting that on average I net about 700mo from after
taxes and a putting
money in reserve.
I’d like something with a nice aft
cabin,
single handable, doesnt require too much, though I might be OK with a runout
engine as I’d like to go with a constant speed prop and shaft
alternator and rig it from the ground up for that. A
steel hull would also be nice after knowing about some poor outcomes with half submerged hits as well as
repairs and also being able to do stuff like make a arms locker, but I’m open to glass too. Think I’d like
furling but would be ok with lazybags on the main, I’d be looking to put in a
water maker, I’d like a good sized
fuel tank and a good
heating system. I also know enough to know what I don’t know and I wouldn’t be rushing into try to single hand it around the world in
winter during a
hurricane or anything.
Maintenance wise I’m fine pulling it out yearly inspecting it and addressing any snags, fixing systems and following the mx
manuals, and not deferring things
Money wise, I’d like sub 50k, ideally 20-30ish as I know it’s money I’ll likely never get back, or have to wait years to sell shy of being able to majorly sell under market value and being in the right place.
Ihe been eyeing some of the colvins, but I’d be concerned with being able to make reasonable upwind progress on a longer leg, a Ingred 38
cutter for a good
price, and couple Morgans so far.
I know, another greenhorn looking for a unicorn, but any tips or thoughts would be great, I’m now donning my flak jacket and helmet
Thanks,
Mac
