If your object is to get the cheapest thing that will comply with US regulations you can get a kit of four flares at Wal-Mart for under $30.

If you want something better that has a better chance of saving your life off shore and away from other boat, count on spending more. Probably a lot more.

I think the suggestion of an EPIRB is a good one for your journey.


As for expired flares, I don't believe it is illegal to have them and they may still work. I keep the unexpired ones in one box and the expired ones in another box. If asked, I show the unexpired ones, not the others.

BoatsUS has an epirb rental program for those who rarely go far offshore but might need the equipment for a limited time. Nice idea i have not checked up on it
