First time chartering in Croatia

Hello Sailing Community-- we are fairly new sailors from the Pacific Northwest, and will be chartering for a week in Croatia, out of Split, during the first week of October. This will of not only our first time chartering (through the Moorings), but certainly our first time sailing in the Med-- any advice or what to watch out for would be appreciated--

Thanks-- Carl Davis

Re: First time chartering in Croatia

We chartered in Croatia in August a couple of years ago and loved it. Navigation is easy and the people are great. Flew into Split and picked up the boat in Solta. Sailed to SesulA Bay on the west end of Solta where an excellent restaurant provided a mooring bouy. VIs was great with easy, stern to/anchor forward mooring. Sailed over to see Bisevo's caves but they were very busy. Hvar was interesting and had great restaurants but our night there (stern to, anchored forward) was not the best - disco until 0200, then wakes from the launches heading back to the mega yachts. Found a nice, quiet bay on the south side of Vis, anchoring in about 50' with a stern line to a rock ashore. Spent an afternoon anchored in the islands SW of Hvar. Returned to Vis, which was our favorite. Water was warm and salty, leading to a post-swim Croatian Sunrise (our invention - equal parts vodka and pineapple juice). We ate excellent sea bass five nights out of seven. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Re: First time chartering in Croatia

There's a lot of posts in European sailing forums about the requirement to have a sailing qualification when chartering.
Croatia gets mentioned a lot as one of the most likely countries to insist on a recognised qualification such as the ICC.

Re: First time chartering in Croatia

Split, Hvar and Korcula are highlights. Hope you get to see Dubrovnik, too. The 'med tie' can be a bit challenging, particularly for the one picking up the lateral line that runs from the seabed to the sea wall. When reversing in, I think it's best to face rearward and steer if you have good access to the wheel over the pedestal.
