Re: First boat for cruising the Med

Elcid;
There are 3 big yards in Preveza, which one is she in? Cleopatra is the nicest and most expensive but they have a chandlery and technical department that can do any work you want done. Right now is off season and everything is shut down plus there is a Greek Lockdown and no shops are open except food and pharmacies. Well some business are open if you call in an order. A new Rocna 25kg cost me 675 euro a month ago at Cleopatra. It was in stock no waiting. Shipping things to Greece right now is terrible.

It's in Cleopatra Marina.

Re the Rocna size, according to the Fitting Guide we fit the 20kg anchor size for a displacement of: 8,090 kg. https://rocna.com/fitment-guide/

Would a 25kg be a better option for us?

Re: First boat for cruising the Med

You can never have 2 much chain I guess in the Med . We only have 60m on a 20kg lewmar but not in med but if you anchor winch can support then is a 25kg much more than a 20 kg. You can spend hours looking at sailing fora on merits of various anchors but if I was to change I think rocna or Manson . Maybe also a collapsible fortress ? Something to stop rolling at anchor as well maybe .

I cant tell you which would be better. I have a Hanse 430e and it about 10.5 ton. My boat came with a 16kg Delta that I thought was seriously undersized. As a matter of fact it dragged on me one night and I had some damage. I considered a Rocna 20kg but in the end chose the 25 because it fit the roller and provided more confidence.

A word about Cleopatra Marina. They are expensive but there is no BS. Its a great place in my opinion. Their technical department is top notch. The facilities are clean and well run. The bar and restaurant are fantastic. Its not always the lowest cost option.

We are 9.8 tonne moody 41 and I would also favour the 25kg rocna if changing and it fits the roller etc . The sailing RAN utube bought a new anchor I recall for his Najad but slightly heavier of course being Najad .

You may want to consider a Mantus instead. Watch “videos of anchors setting thread”
My personal experience with a Rocna was much worse than with my current Mantus. Mostly sandy/muddy substrate where I sail

I don’t think we’ll see an easing of the market this side of 2022 and Covid has demonstrated to urban people the drawbacks of lack of access to the countryside ( sea) and hence the demand ( my rural house in Ireland has junked in value by 30% in a year , not selling of course )

So it maybe there will be increased demand for “ outdoor” pursuits from an urban population

So I think second guessing the future is worth it. It might be better for u but equally it might be worse

Remember your money is being inflated away as you wait and running costs , marina , yard fees , parts are rising
it is seller market right now but a lot of these new buyers are impulse buyers who have never owned a boat and just watch some Youtube sailing channels. In 6 to 12 months the reality will sink in of the cost associated with owning a boat. Nobody can predict the future but I'm willing to bet that post COVID a lot of these boats will appear on the market again.

Maybe, but I need it now for various reasons. Bad timing, but that's life. You can't optimise for everything.

Another thing I've learned from investing. It's impossible to time the market. Even if you are right in predicting how the market will swing - and which factors will lead to that particular swing. It's really difficult to predict the exact time frame.

it is indeed impossible to time the market but I also think that there is no logic behind the current sellers market. For years the monohull segment has been a buyers market. I have not read yet that one of the symptoms of COVID is that you become suddenly a sailor or boat owner you are seeing the same crazy impulse buying in the bicycle market, delivery times for new bikes are up to next summer! My prediction is that just like with bikes lots of these boats will be left to collect dust. Unlike a bike there is however a substantial cost in storage or marina fees for a boat and my gut feeling is that a lot of these impulse boat buyers will want to get rid of it when the recurrent invoices arrive! Good luck with your boat!

Just like predictions of bad weather , you will eventually be right , the issue is when you might be right

Hence you might be waiting some considerable time , all the time your not sailing and your money is being inflated away.

Keep an eye out for my cruisersforum burger in lefkas
