First boat coming through...

Hi guys,

My dream is finally happening. I am in the process of buying my first sailing boat, a Beneteau Oceanis 411, 2001. She's a beauty.

I will be hauling it out in the coming weeks for a survey. If everything is fine, then I'll be the new proud owner.

One of my first tasks is going to be any fouling. I was under the impression that I needed to and the hull after it dries out. A worker at the yard adviced to wet sand the hull just after they power wash it when they haul it out.

What should I do? Any advice is appreciated.

The boat has Micron International 77 and I plan to use the same product again giving it there coats for two years.

Why do you think you need to antifoul? How long will you have the boat out of the water? Just long enough to antifoul? I ask, because, maybe all she needs is a scraping of barnacles, which, depending on the quantity, could be done in the water, avoiding a haul out.

I'll be hauling it out for a pretty purchase survey and anti fouling is due by next January. I do not think it has any barnacles to be honest. Just antifouling it to start off afresh once it is on the hard. I'll also check all through hulls etc.

Will the boat be in the water or on the hard after the summer?

To answer your question. Wet sanding with 60 grit after the power wash sounds like a good plan. Any idea how many layers of antifouling paint are on the bottom? Take a good look. If large chunks are flaking off either before or during sanding, then you should consider removing most or all the layers before applying antifouling.

If it's not bad and you'll be using frequently and you want to put off the bucks consider doing nothing. Put it in the water and go. What growth you get as you go just jump in and clean. We purchased three years ago and the paint was marginal then, still marginal today but cleans up and keeps moving.

I'm of the pressure wash and paint crowd, if you do decided to paint. If the old paint is sound and the bottom clean it will adhere fine and you'll be on your way.

Enjoy her!

Re: First boat coming through...

Thanks guys. I think they make this antifouling and drying to commercial! I still be hauling it out and doing it this time round as I want to know what is underneath and the condition of everything.

Thanks for all the advice.
