Re: Finally bought a sailboat!

i remember being in the Keys and the wind was incessant .. blowing 25 - 30 knots for days. nobody was going out .. but the big Morgan OI did .. raised all her sails and headed out to the horizon

Re: Finally bought a sailboat!

Bottom line. What you describe, if indeed this is the case is a great deal IF you have additional at least $20K for refit, considering you can find some used stuff etc. If the standing rigging is more than 10 years old (I guess it is at least 20) you must replace it. Probably replace throughhalls seackoks and plumbing - these are key safety matters.
After all that and probably much more, you’ll have a nice strong boat in a great condition.
Best of luck!

Re: Finally bought a sailboat!

You still have to rebuild the boat, its been washed up sitting on high ground, any damage to the under water area is unknown and could be extensive. Why the 'buy now or else' ultimatum?
In any case unless you have the rescorces and knowledge to see the project through don't touch it it will be quite costly.
By the way have you done a backround check on who owns the yacht?
Insurance company?

Re: Finally bought a sailboat!

$5K is a great deal IMO. I'm a 1983 Morgan OI 416 owner - bought her new and have sailed extensively on both coasts of Florida, the Dry Tortugas, and half a dozen long cruises to the Bahamas over the years. The boat you are buying (or have bought) probably has a hand laid-up hull at least an inch thick. The full length keel should help her slide easily off the marsh and back into the water. Best of luck with your project.

Re: Finally bought a sailboat!

Good lord people, if this is a boat that the OP likes and can do something with, go for it. Such negative Nancy's.
People thought we were crazy when we bought our Endeavour. But I like working on boats and bringing things back to life that others would just toss.
I say what's to lose if she floats and runs for $5k!

Well, what did you decide? And is the boat floating?

Re: Finally bought a sailboat!

The engine and Genset alone are worth $5k, I imagine. Me and GF looked at and seriously considered an OI41 before finding a sweet deal on a pretty much sailaway Bruce Roberts 44. The OI is very spacious and quite strongly built. once afloat with engine running and pushing the boat with no issues that boat is a steal at 5k. As it is, it is a gamble but IMHO a good one. Make sure the name of the seller matches the one on the unexpired Certificate Of Documentation. Get insurance quote and find a slip for the the boat before you get stuck with it.

I will echo the Negative Nancys and state my doubt about CG pulling the boat off, and not screwing it up in the bargain. But you can very likely kedge it off during a very high tide. Anyway get some anchors out. Way out. On windlass and sheet winches. When water is up, crank her off bit by bit. At low tide, get busy with with the "Mexican Dragline" and dig dig dig. If you have a fixed prop, take it off. You will create less damage than someone else trying to tow her off, and a barge and crane will probably cost you $10k minimum for a day, due to demand. Still... maybe worth it?

Bout the only way I think the CG would get involved in its removal is if is sitting on a CG base, and then, I doubt those boys would be gentle with it.
