Re: Figaro 3

Foils.

Beamier aft. I think and assymetric rather than a spi. Better interior.

Foils. Foils. Foils.

Proto to be tested this summer. 40 to be delivered by the end of 2018.

It will be the first ever mass produced foiler. And I want one.

VPLP/Benneteau.

Yeah, since the first thing I'm wondering is the price, then I obviously can't afford one! I can't wait to see how they might transform racing in the future. Tho just don't see those foils happening on cruising boats....yet.

I think the price is $150,000 or so.

Well, that's not too bad, but still can't afford it since that's probably what I've spent the last few years upgrading my boat

A lot of it is that the class is huge in Europe. Half the IMOCA, VOR, and MOD sponsored pros have Figaro's. The initial build order for the class was 50 boats delivered in 2018, before the design was even finished. With a good number of the major programs planning on buying multiple boats as soon as production demand slows down.

This means Beneteau can amortize construction costs over a large number of boats right from the beginning.

Re: Figaro 3

This brings the price of a s/h F2 to about 50k. BUT now that I have seen the F3 I am sort of reluctant to buy an F2.

Just think about it, yesterday F2 was a dream boat and overnight it becomes cheap and obsolete.

Still, it is all great news as I may yet live to sail one. I have not foiled yet. I can only afford a Moth but there is none here. I also think a Moth may be above my fitness level.

Interestingly, an early draft showed a canting keel but an advanced draft proto model sports a fixed one.

Eh, I bet F4 will have the canting one then ... ;-)

Cheers,
b.

Re: Figaro 3

For me, the F2 is STILL a dream boat. But I don't think they will be giving them away just yet.

Re: Figaro 3

I a not even sure if the design has been finalized, though I know it's pretty close, but I think they went with a fixed keel. The canting one just added to much expense (canting keel plus two daggerboard).

If you want to foil, take a look for a foiling A-Cat. Used prices are sticking around $12k usd here, and they are flying off the market pretty quickly, so even if you decide it isn't for you getting out of it is pretty easy. Not quite as fast as the Moths yet, but much much easier to sail.

They are still one of the best single handed Ocean going boats ever built. They just don't have a premier class anymore (or won't in a year). It wouldn't suprise me if there isn't a spin off class of them for decades.

Buy a race ready one in Europe, then solo it back across the Atlantic... it is litterly what they were designed to do.
