Faster Design Cutter or Schooner

"Oh how it scoons!" said the Dutch lady, because that's how they would say 'scoots' = fast in Dutch.

So, the design of the boat supports the intention by the sails, and which is traditionally the faster boat? A Cutter or a Schooner?

Re: Faster Design Cutter or Schooner

Cutters do well on a close reach

Schooners to well on a broad reach

(as a gross generalisation, all other things being equal)

Schooners are sexier, and for the same size, have smaller/more sails.

Cutters will generally go to weather better than a schooner but a broad reach on a schooner is a blast. The photo above is the "Californian", I was her captain for most of 1996, a kick offshore on a broad reach.

I think this is a fair question. Key phrase is 'intention of the design.'
