fast offshore passage maker.
Hey CF im just curious about fast, seaworthy offshore passage makers, so my question is in your opinion what makes a Fast, seaworthy offshore passage maker?
Or what are some designs that fit that description?

Re: fast offshore passage maker.
What makes a fast offshore passagemaker? Why, waterline length. Laws of physics.

Re: fast offshore passage maker.
Certain catamarans might qualify, too.
But I'm really with deckofficer on this one, I also immediately thought of the Deerfoot and Sundeers.
Also have friends who cruised in J boats, and it was also quick.

Re: fast offshore passage maker.
You need to put us in the ballpark of budget or size..... Otherwise I say a Gunboat cat, A Dashew mono or a Cigarette offshore racer...

How about under 40 footers? in your opinion any boats that fit the criteria under 40 feet?

Most definatly, a 50 year old (give or take a couple of years) Cal 40. A downwind screamer that can still win the Transpac.
Or you could up the ante to a Santa Cruz 50.

I cruised a J/37 for a few years. Absolutely great sailing boat and easy to handle in heavy weather. Small galley, not a lot of fuel tankage -- but you sail it everywhere anyway. Easy to single hand.

Others have mentioned Dashews Sundeers - that would be my choice too where speed were the main criterion. That or a Gunboat. But the Sundeer, unlike the Gunboat, is relatively inexpensive to build. The idea, shared with the MacGregor 65, is simple - spread out a given hull volume over a longer, narrower hull. You win speed three ways - waterline length; with the accommodation of a 45-footer, the boat is lighter; the narrow beam starts to cheat hull speed.
The Sundeer is an absolutely wonderful boat which reel off 250 mile days like child's play. I can't imagine why no one has made a boat like this since. Berthing cost is the only downside to this approach; maybe the large proportion of sailors whose boats stay in marinas 97% of the time limits the market.
Gunboat is extremely cool if cost is no object.

Re: fast offshore passage maker.
"fast, seaworthy offshore passage makers"
A couple more thoughts:
The key word is Seaworthy... you will get a lot of opinions on whether a spade rudder, interior liner, cheap seacocked, lightweight boat is "seaworthy". You will have to answer that yourself. If you deem that seaworthy, there are many fast boats, including the newer Beneteaus, Jeanneaus as well as those mentioned.etc.
Thinking further, what often makes a boat fast is the skipper. How much sail are you willing to leave up? Fly a spinnaker in 25 knots+? Basically sailboats are limited to the speed by their waterline length.... A westsail 32 can be made to reach her hull speed with enough sail up. Yes light boats can be made to plane/semi-plane.. if you are willing to leave enough sail up. But in most situations a 32 foot waterline is a 32 foot waterline... a light boat will accelerate faster to hull speed, but both boats will do hull speed.
I think the answer to your question is How much crew? and how much of a risk taker are you?

Re: fast offshore passage maker.
The reason i was saying under 40ft is because, no crew LOL singlehanded. but ya the j/37 is a real nice boat... j boats sure know what they are doing.

Re: fast offshore passage maker.
Could i get your guys opinion on the seaworthiness of the newer production boats; beneteau, catalina etc... What i mean is would any of you feel comfortable sailing through a storm? and not worrying about dying.
