Extending pullpit rail

I am considering extending my rigid pullpit rail up the side of the boat as far as the midships gate. This for reasons of safety primarily. What worries me is that it seems such an obvious enhancement vs wire safety lines that there must be a reason I have never seen it done before???
Lots of motor boats have a solid safety rail. Why not sail yachts?
Basically, am I being thick here?
Thanks!
