That is the usual dilemma… although given enough money they probably aren’t mutually exclusive, on my budget I’m not sure how one resolves it. After several decades I’ve never managed to settle it with finality (and have owned several in the mid-upper 40-foot range) until I finally insisted on my own smaller boat (and the Admiral bought her own as well – we share every other weekend…)

I’m going to swim a little upstream of some of the advice, but synthesizing what has been written one of the things I think is right on is the 1/3 – 2/3 rule, and that’s if you are lucky with few refitment surprises – you’ll likely spend 50% again over the purchase price in the process getting everything to your liking on a 20-30 year old vessel – and that assumes you go easy on the techno-gizmos. Frankly, I think folks buy too much boat these days, but that seems to be the trend and assuming your total budget is around $100K (or so it would seem from your wording), I’d try to get as much boat as I could for $60-65K, which generally will bring you down in the mid/upper 30-foot range for a well found vessel (which may also lessen your sailing workload, but that’s another issue…). But Paul is correct, keep your eye on the storage and tankage question from the beginning, it is easy to lose sight of that when beguiled with acres of lovingly maintained teak and mahogany, only to discover that your water supply will need to be augmented or there is no wet-locker, or you’ll need to refuel every third night, or, or…

Best of luck !!
