Exp. w/ Chesapeake Sailmakers or Bacon Sails??

Well, this week's 40 kt winds on the Chesapeake made rags out of my 30 yr old (?) reefed sails, so I guess its really time.... I'm looking for cruising/ occasional racing dacron materials and am wondering if anyone has experience with either Chesapeake Sailmakers (Elvstrom) or Bacon's new sails or has other reasonably priced local lofts?

Bacons is top rate. Sails are built in the Quantum loft offshore.

They've done mains and jibs for 2 boats.

Never used Chesapeake, but he seems to know what he is doing.

Not new, but I was very happy with my experience buying a used sail from Bacon. Seemed like really good people and very easy to talk to. Zero pressure and answered all my newby questions.

Talk to Jerry Latel at Evolution Sails in Deltaville. They make excellent sails.

Mention you saw him at the recent boat show and I'm fairly certain you would still get the show discount. Also may not have to pay sales tax if shipped from his loft to MD.

Chesapeake does good work. Had their stuff on my dad's Jeanneau 58. Kent Sails is what I currently have on my 9.6, Still good. Made in 98, but they spend 5 months a year in the sail bags due to the seasonal nature of the great lakes. I'm having another set made by Rolly Tasker this winter, as well as a new asym.

Chuck O'Malley (Chesapeake Sailmakers) has made and repaired sails for my weekend cruising boat and the race boat I skipper for many years. Very knowledgable, honest, reasonably-priced and does good work. Highly recommend him.

Had Bacon make a genoa and main. Had a problem with the main. They were gracious and apologetic. They corrected the problem quickly. Will buy from them again.

Another thumbs up for Bacon's. Good starting point. First carefully define what it is you want and need as the price will vary with the quality, weight and stiffness of the cloth. We've found some sail makers will cheat on the materials used.

I like Bacon and have bought a lot from them over the years, including a genoa and main. However, the genoa was not cut to my specs--it was shorter than what I ordered. Also, the instructions for measuring the dimensions I needed for the lazy bag were incorrect. Finally, when I took my genoa in for subsequent cleaning and minor repairs, the price was not the typical Bacon value--it was more than half the price of a new sail.

I am about to measure and order a bacon lazy bag. What was "off"about the instructions for measuring?

Chesapeake sails has made genoa, asm spin, stackpack, bimini repair....all good and pricing competitive, on time too.

The instructions said for me to measure the height of my collapsed mainsail on the boom--which was about 4 inches. However when confined within the lazy bag, the height of the sail is actually about 10 inches. Hence, the lazy bag was far too small. Now this was about seven years ago, and I hope by now they have the instructions corrected.

We worked with Chuck O'Malley of Chesapeake Sailmakers on a new main this year. He was very easy to work with and I think he is quite knowledgable. He's been doing it a long time. Pricing on the Elvestrom main was significantly better than we were quoted from Quantum and UK Sailmakers
