Endeavour 40 Center Cockpit . . . Opinions ?

Hi all,

Looking for opinions, insight, pros/cons et. regarding the Endeavor 40 center cockpit.

Known issues?
Performance?
Blue water capabilities?
Liveaboard qualities?
Current values and future re-sale?

Thanks in advance!

The E40 was a typical piece of crap "value" boat.
All in all, I like them, and would happily live-aboard and/or do the Caribbean in a nice one.

Many of the endeavours have fuel &/or water tanks in the keel. Water gets down there and sits, corroding the tank. many have had replacements already and usually some modifications to mitigate the design flaw. I run my boat bone dry so my brand new fuel tank is sitting 'low and dry'.

performance of my 42cc is OK, especially once the breeze pipes up. Not a great light wind boat and mediocre pointing ability.

they have cruised all over the Caribbean but I don't know of trans oceanic passages.

Livaboard qualities? CC boats usually get high marks for that. The cockpit of most CC boats is small but the aft cabin is usually very nice.

There is a pretty good collection of data at endeavourowners.com

When I have friends with modern production boats aboard they are impressed with the old style, solid teak cabinetry, the general feel of a more solid boat and the stiffer ride in choppy seas than they find with lightweight, cheap new boats. These are their opinions, not mine.

I've owned my E-40 since 1988. My wife and I sailed it throughout the Carribbean for a year and a half. It was not fast-except on a reach-but it was solid and comfortable. It was designed by Bob Johnson of Island Packet. For its mission it is a good design. But it's a production boat-built in a very competitive environment in 1980's Clearwater/St. Pete. So don't expect high-end New England type construction. It has flaws like most other boats, but they are correctable w/out blowing your entire cruising kitty. Top of the list:fuel and water tanks in the bilge, plastic ports, water damage to otherwise beautiful teak interior. Most of these boats are getting age on them so they often need extensive upgrading-unless you can find one that's already been redone. Overall, I still love my E-40 and plan to take it back to the Carribbean for a few year cruise. I would'nt hesitate to cross an ocean in it but I wouldn't recommend taking it around the Horn. Pm me if you have any questions. Cptn happy

I assume that goes for their 50+ foot range as well?? Just curious as I've seen a few and wondered the same thing... Any thoughts on the higher end of that range??

A slow boat by any standard. Not fun to sail. Forget going to weather.

Re: Endeavour 40 Center Cockpit . . . Opinions ?

We completed a 7 year circumnavigation of the world from 2005 to 2012 on our 1982 Endeavour 40 cutter. We sailed that boat through all types of weather suffering a full on knockdown in the Indian Ocean and even a whale strike off the coast of Australia. In all, the boat managed to sail 38,000 miles across the pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans (it even survived going under Cape Agulhas, South Africa). In the end, I would say they are rather tough boats that I believe are 'underrated'. Plus, Don Johnson lived on one in the first season of Miami Vice!

Re: Endeavour 40 Center Cockpit . . . Opinions ?

Hello,

I am the owner of an Endeavour 40 ketch, Dolcenea. I crossed the Atlantic last summer, from Long Island to the Loire river in France. My boat is still there, in a boatyard. I am asking a "Boat Passeport" from French customs, in order to be able to stay and sail in the area for the coming months. French customs are asking the plans (including cross sections with all possible details) and technical characteristics (materials, etc) of the boat as part of that "passeport" delivery process.

Any one would have things of that sort yet more detailed than what we usually find on internet?

Thank you ! - François
