Elan Impression 384

I'm thinking of buying a 2006/7 Elan Impression 384. Seems they have two engine options a Volvo Penta D2 - 40 with 40 HP and the D1 -30 with 29HP. Question - is the 29 option ' man enough ' ?? for the job and also any opinions on the yacht overall please. I'm a med sailor at heart.

Re: Elan Impression 384

Hmmm... tough one I think. The boat looks like a long waterline, not too heavy and probably an easily driven hull. So 29 hp might be fine. However, I don't know those engines.... what rpm is the engine rated at for 29 HP?

Re: Elan Impression 384

Hi - Don't know the rpm rating of the 29 HP. Displacement is 7600 kg if that helps.

Re: Elan Impression 384

A rough rule of thumb is 1 hp per 500lb total weight (or 1kW per 304kg) to drive a boat to hull speed.
17416 lbs displacement* ÷ 500 lbs ≈ 34.8 HP

*Per ➥ ELAN IMPRESSION 384 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com

Re: Elan Impression 384

Excerpted from an earlier discussion
Here ➥ http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...size-1577.html

Westerbeke Corporation suggests 2 hp for every 1,000 lb of displacement for coastal cruising, and 2.5 hp per 1,000 lb of displacement for offshore.

In their book "The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction" the authors suggest a good rule-of-thumb is 1 hp for every 500 lb of displacement.

Some people suggest 1 hp for every ft. of boat waterline length.

Some people suggest 3 - 5 hp (continuous rating) per long ton (to calculate the boat's weight in long tons divide the displacement by 2,240).

Re: Elan Impression 384

OK.... from the Volvo website:
"

"
All engines are rated at low rpm, which means

only 1,800–2,300 rpm at cruising speed. This

results in minimal vibrations and low noise

levels – which are further reduced with the

Saildrive."

kudos to Volvo for rating their engines at less than "screaming" rpms!
So I'm thinking the D1-30 should be fine. Les enamoured with the saildrive though....

Re: Elan Impression 384

Hi All
Many thanks to Cheechako and Gord May for your input, very helpful. Seems the 29 hp option is OK on the numbersand the 40hp gives a bit of a margin on power is going offshore. Thanks again

Is there a shower in the 384? I see only washbasin and toilet.

Re: Elan Impression 384

Hi
We decided to upgrade and buy a share in a Elan 434 Impression.
Most' impressed' with the yacht - even has a 75 hp Volvo (plenty of power)
Good luck with the 384 - it was a bit tight in the fore cabin for our liking.
