Eberspächer heating. Do you leave yours on through the night?

Hi, I have an Eberspächer diesel heater on my Beneteau Oceanis 40.

I want to know if it is the norm to leave it on through the night while you sleep.

I prefer to live at ambient and only run it for a bit first thing in the morning in an attempt to get the crew out of bed....

Hi,

We have a Webasto system, and we leave it on all night with no problems. That's sort of the point as far as we're concerned, since we really don't want to wake up to a freezing boat (we live aboard in winter too). The units are designed to be operated this way. We pretty much set the thermostat and leave it to its own devices. We'll leave the boat for short periods with it on as well.

Keep an operable carbon monoxide detector and a smoke detector near the unit for safety, of course.

When it's cold outside I leave it on a low setting - Airtronic 4... it's quiet and dry and comfy and the thermostat works a charm! I love this heater!

I must admit my unit is rising 30 years old and the thermostat doesn't seem to work anymore... it either on or its not... tends to influence my descision making a bit....

Are you sure it ever had one? Mine doesn't. Every fan coil has a control unit which looks like a thermostat, but in fact is only a fan control.

To the OP: one thing to be careful of with these units is that they will soot up if left to run on a low setting for a long time. I prefer to run it relatively hard and then switch it off. So except in very cold weather (near freezing), I will shut it down overnight (why God made warm duvets). Then fire it up about an hour before getting out of bed (for which you can even set a timer if you like).

Have air Snugger heater and I will run mine all night long they even have this in semi trucks.to keep the driver's warn at night

Please be careful. Be sure that nothing touching to its exhaust pipe. And exhaust is not blowing directly to dinghy or fender etc.

Yes, we leave ours on at night when needed, but ...

Make sure to install a CO alarm, make sure it is mounted CORRECTLY (CO is heavier than air, so alarm should by mounted low, and perhaps near a heating vent), and make sure it works, checking frequently.

We know this because our previous Eber developed a leak in the heat exchanger / burner and the CO meter may well have saved our bacon.

Hi Everyone
My Webasto pump makes a noisy clicking sound which I can hear throughout the boat so I'd never be able to sleep through that.
Is the Eberspacher also as noisy ?

Yup we have a Carbon Monoxide alarm fitted. Might even get another one. Good tip about things in the way of the exhaust. I am very conscious of that but I can see by the burn mark in one of the fenders that the previous owner slipped up there.

Our Eberspächer also makes a clicking / ticking sound. It's not too loud to be disturbing. I might be wrong but I think the sound gets louder the lower the setting. I.e on full power the ticking is is hardly noticeable.

How can I find out what model eberspächer heater I have? The instruction manual covers several models and there is no sticker on the outside of the black plastic housing like I have seen in some peoples photos.

Well..... There are two black boxes on the galley bulkhead...one with vent/off/heat on it and the other with a rotary knob and numbers....
Maybe because its next to the hatch it never feels warm

Ditto re off at night. Warms the boat as quick as when turned on in the morning.
