drogue with heave to?

I don't, so far, carry a drogue. I heave-to fairly frequently and typically show one kt, more or less, over the ground. I don't, so far, carry a drogue.
Question: if for some reason you'd rather have your speed over the ground be more to leeward and less forward, does a drogue set from the stern hold the boat more off the wind and thus make the travel more sideways? Any experience with this?

I can't answer your specific query, but do suggest that you have a look at the Pardey's technique of streaming a small parachute from the bow with a bridle line to the aft quarter to reduce way when hove to. They make great claims for this method, but I don't see many folks actually using, or even planning to use it.

Never heard of streaming a drogue astern while hove to. Given that the boat should be drifting slowly down wind, I expect it would slow the drift of the stern and thus cause the boat to lie broader to wind and waves...not what you want.

Off the bow might help reduce forereaching.

Would be interesting to try.

Ditto for reading about the Pardey's technique, but that uses a sea anchor not a drogue.

did the Pardey's say what particular circumstances they would use this technique in or is it their general use technique rather than using the sails and rudder?
