Divinycell Cored Hull

I am currently looking at this boat Southern Pacific 42 Cruising yacht 1990 | Trade Me

One issue with it is that you have to basically climb up the mast to attach or detach the mains halyard which could be an issue. I'm 5 ft 11 and still have to climb, at least there are mast steps there.

But my question about it relates to the divinycell coring. We have only owned wood or solid glass hulled boats before. So is a cored hull better or worse ?

Please no anchor comments . We will be replaceing at least one of the cqr's

Lol it has happened then. Cruisers Forum has run out of opinions so there are none left to give me. Damn

You people who squandered all those opinions without any thought for when one might be needed.

Shame on you.

I have to climb the mast as well so leave it attached and use a bungy to pull to one side.
Plenty of old racing boats running around with cored hulls

Re: Divinycell cored hull

The coring is not an issue if it was done correctly. Also importantly is , anywhere there is a thru hull or deck hardware was it bedded correctly. Our Leopard38 is cored below wl, the manufacturer built it with solid glass area 6" around each thru hull fitting. A good surveyor should be able to tell you more. Our old cat was klegecell cored, very similar to Diviny, i think and it had aged well!

Re: Divinycell Cored Hull

Cores make great sense where they add to the boat and a horror where misused by the builder, or when mistreated by ex-owners.

I have seen some designers and builders move away from hulls cored below waterline. They still seem very happy with topsides and decks.

Personally, I do not like cored decks as ex owners tend to drill holes everywhere and that's how your nightmare starts. We have one.

My last boat was Divinycell cored - no problems. There are newer foams available now considered to be "better" but I wouldn't be concerned about a cored boat because Divinycell was used.
