If the foot switch actually carries the winch/windlass current, you really need a good switch, as stated above. But if the foot switch control a switching solenoid, then the maximum current is less than 5 amps. Any switch will
work electrically. Find one that fits, looks good and is waterproof.
When my fancy Maxwell switch failed a number of years ago, I was in a place where getting a new one was, mildly put, impractical. I found a push-button switch
sold for auto horns for $2. Bent a piece of
aluminum to hold I in the old switch housing. It’s still working after 15+ years, but I’ve got a real spare if I live long enough and need it.
