Deck Delamination

Hi all,

I've found a couple of spots on the starboard side where there is delamination in the deck. I've been told 2 different ways for repair. One way was to drill holes in the deck and use an allan key go remove the soft balsa core and then inject epoxy. The second way is to remove the headliner and repair the delamination from the inside. What do you experienced sailors think?? Any other suggestions?

You don't say how large an area is involved. If they involve any area at all I'm afraid you'll be looking at opening up from the bottom. While a messy job, and one which I certainly don't envy you, that's probably the safest bet. I say safest because you have better assurance of getting all the crud out. Also, it doesn't mess with your non-skid pattern on the deck.

I repaired mine from the bottom side because the glass down there is much thinner and I've got teak decks....I cut out the glass with a dremil...removed/replaced the bad core...reglassed.

Each area is quite small, perhaps 6-8 square inches for one and 4 square inches for the other.

I think that my own preference would still be to go at them from underneath, if possible. If nothing else there wouldn't be a need for fancy finish work if its going to be covered with a headliner.
