Cruising vs Sailing

Sailed the Chesapeake on a 30ft S2 using charts, lines of sight and a depth finder back in 80s.. always had power boat. I'm a gearhead, like tinkering, repairing and like the idea of having a fast boat..
There are some pretty neat boats one could do some Eastern US cruising on.
41/45 OI great for the family, but seems a motor sailor and fuel consumer.
There are also a few big racers around, 45 Nelson/Marek cruiser interior, somewhat different deck, shorter keel. still have to cross deck to enter the boat, isolated cockpit.. Interior layout like the OI, nice wood. There's also a couple 46 flush deck Ericson aft cockpits, nicely done cruiser interior with rear staterooms and double bunks, full galley, single head. Big boats.. but not foul weather friendly as is. Probably fun to sail with a couple hands in nice weather..
The S2 30 was a pretty snappy boat, very sailable, too small to relax in..
Aft cockpits seem the most livable on deck and transom friendly, but lack aft cabins until pretty modern and expensive.. Save a few Hunter 40s with the rear state room(s).
There are a couple Morgan NA40, kind of small inside for three or more adults to relax in. Nice looking boat though.. quarter birth
Couple 45 Starrett/Jenks, quarter birth

Thoughts on 40-45 fast sloops @50K or so.. nothing with a lot of wood on top..

Thanks

Re: Cruising vs Sailing

In your price range, take a look at the Wauquiez 38. It has an impressive aft cabin for a performance oriented, aft cockpit, 38' boat. It's a Ted Hood design: the centerboard would be good for the Chesapeake, and with the board down, it's a stiff, fairly fast boat.

The only negative for you is the teak decks. How handy are you? The decks come up pretty easily, especially if they are a little punky http://www.cruisersforum.com/images/.../whistling.gif

J40, but it will cost a bit more than $50K.
