After several years of seeking the right dingy for our proposed 3/4 month
cruise (without resupply availability) of the
remote, beautiful but very challenging Kimberley’s I have purchased a secondhand 10 foot portaboat folding dingy.
My yachts slightly unusual and rarely used ability to plane under its oversized
outboard restricts the ability to just tow a hard dingy as most do up there.
The ability on rare occasions to
power over strong tidal currents and cross breaking rivermouth bars meant the choose of dingy’s able to be carried onboard was very limiting.
We normally have a perfectly fitting on the foredeck small
inflatable dingy with high pressure
inflatable floor which combined with our SUP and our yachts super low
draft (which gives it the ability to run right up onto banks and beaches ) works well.
However in the Kimberley’s the combination of crocodiles (which apparently like to taste test inflatables) combined with sharp
oyster covered and sharp rock landings and longer dingy transit distances meant our inflatable dingy sadly wasn’t up to the task.
For this
cruise we won’t be taking the SUP so the Portaboat will carry in its place on the Magna stanchion carriers.
In addition the possible challenges of accessing (or availability due to a drying) of the limited wild fresh
water sources have seen me
purchase a small secondhand RO
watermaker.
The
Katadyn Power Survivor 40e came with lots of spares but the combination of the lack of appropriate fitment locations with the unlikely need to use this on any of our other planned future cruises led me to boxing it and making it a portable unit.
Should this and my other long list of completed modifications extend our cruising without resupply period from our
current 4.5 week longest stint to the planned 3/4 months then I feel I will have achieved my original goal of creating a trailerable cruising yacht.
The final
photo below shows the cased RO
watermaker stowed in my yachts portable
generator custom box. The smaller of my two
Honda generators still fits with it in there.
Due to my larger
solar array we didn’t need or take a
generator on our last over 8 weeks cruise in the Whitsundays and I am debating leaving even my smaller 10eu behind for the very long Kimberley’s cruise.
