Cooper Yachts - Seabird 37 Cutter

Does anyone have or know where I could obtain some manufacture drawings for a Cooper Yachts - Seabird 37, Cutter, 1980? I am having a compression post support issue and am looking at how the post is supported at the keel. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

My boat was manufactured by Cooper Enterprises Inc. Canada. Manufacture is out of business.

Thank you for your reply. I do have the sailboat data but what I need is the manufacture drawing for the compression post supports.

I have done a few of those repairs on other boats...can you post a picture of what is going on and describe the symptoms?

Re: Cooper Yachts - Seabird 37 Cutter

Hi,

First, thank you again for your reply and offer to help. My boat is in Mexico and I am currently in Alaska visiting family for Christmas. I had noticed that the mast was caving in on one side and so unstepped the mast just before I left to investigate. I have some people in the work yard taking a closer look at it while gone. They removed the compression post today and investigated the cabin overhead and the support below the compression post. The attached photos (2 each) shows the issues.

The second picture, I see a hole. Looking at the Data.com profile view, it appears the step is just forward of the foot of the keel. It looks to me that there mst be a void under that area. It's likely the layup in that area was not enough. I would cut that section out use something to fill the void, then epoxy/glass that area an 1" thick and spread it out 6"s all the way around where the mast sits. You will only be able to glass up a 1/4" or so at a time as to not have the curing process run away.

Bryan White:

Cooper Yachts is long out of business qua builders, but a descendant exists as:

Cooper Boating,
1832 Mast Tower Lane,
Vancouver, BC
V6H 4B6

Phone: +1 888-999-6419

Cooper boating is essentially a charter outfit and sailing school.

Forbes Cooper who started the business back in 1966 died a very few months ago at age 91.

It's a very long shot, but you might contact Cooper Boating to see if their archives will yield anything. Or the Vancouver Maritime Museum.

I both cases I would do it by letter rather than by e-mail. That would be considered the gentlemanly thing to do and therefore the more likely to generate an answer.

If that yields nothing, it would not be too difficult to retro-engineer and build a mast step at least as good as was the original one.
