Confusing mainsheet traveler hardware

I am on a 57' Bruce Roberts as a crewmember and I think it is missing some hardware. I have never seen this setup on a traveler with a big stainless U fitting. The boom only has one steel attachment on the end to hook a mainsheet or whatever. No pulleys or tackle. What is missing? What is this U fitting? The cockpit where the line leads to has a large HArkin winch for the mainsheet.

Difficult to tell from the photos but I'd guess there's a mainsheet missing / somebody put it into storage and replaced it with some cordage to keep the boom centered...

I’m hoping the mainsheet is missing....that twisted cordage isn’t up to the task.

There should be a tackle on the hoops, or at the least a substantial turning block on the traveler cars.

A large turning block would allow the use of a large high strength line as a single part sheet to the winch.

So you can't just use that "U" stainless piece to run a heavy line through to the winch in the cockpit?

Re: Confusing mainsheet traveler hardware

... at least two giveaways that there's something wrong are that the "sheet" doesn't look beefy enough and that 3-strand is rarely used for sheets (nowadays).

Yes, I just put that cheap line there to show the path through the "eye" to the big winch in the cockpit. Sorry.

Re: Confusing mainsheet traveler hardware

could you make a picture from "afar" where we could see like the whole boom and a get a rough idea of the deck layout?

Re: Confusing mainsheet traveler hardware

So even with that big winch and the right main line, I need more blocks and pulleys to complete the system?

Most likely. How large is the main?

.. but just rummage through every locker, most likely you'll find the mainsheet.
