Comet and/or Rubbing Compound on my nonSkid?

I was talking w a gelcoat repair guy, and I mentioned that I saw the guy next to me using comet to scrub his nonskid. he said, you can do that, but it strips everything from the gelcoat. after that you can use some rubbing compound to restore some of the resins to the gelcoat.

Any thoughts?
