Cheoy Lee

Might have a great opportunity to get a 1966 Cheoy Lee 38'.

Not much info online. Anybody have any experience, knowledge, etc. they can share.

Re: Cheoy Lee

That 50-year old boat is likely in need of a complete refit (>$!00,000).

Is it the Sigma 38 designed by S&S or the CL 38 designed by Richards? They are very different boats and neither was reported to have been in production in 66. Please narrow it down if possible. People often get the years of manufacture confused on these older boats.

Find yourself the best surveyor you can afford unless you are qualified. It can be the find of a lifetime or a money pit.

Re: Cheoy Lee

Sorry, it's actually a 36'. (35.8 to be precise).

Boats on a dock shared by a friend.

70+ yr old Owner "works" on it all the time...I think to get away from his wife 😊

Looks solid and in good shape. I'll definitely have a survey done if I decide to buy...but I haven't even been aboard yet. But for the price, I could afford to spend some cash on repairs/upgrades.

I just was wondering if anyone knew about these boats. I've reached out to some forum emails, but no response. Any info would be helpful!

Re: Cheoy Lee

Please provide more information/photos.

I've worked on a number of Cheoy Lee's; done considerable work on a 35' Lion of that era. Much will depend on how previous owners have cared for and upgraded. But, as I said, it is likely a 50-year old boat project.

Re: Cheoy Lee

That's not too far after Cheoy Lee went to fiberglass hulls, they built the hulls pretty darn thick in those days. I talked to a gentleman who has a 1965 30' CL and he was relating how rugged the hull on his boat was.
Like anything it depends on how well it was cared for over the years, it could either be a gem or a nightmare.

Re: Cheoy Lee

Thanks for the info. What I'm really looking for, is to find out if anyone knows about problem areas with these boats. I know any 50 year old boat is going to have their issues (an I can evaluate and deal with those). I'm wondering if anyone knows specific problem areas that I should know ahead of time or that might be a deal breaker at any price (i.e. ballast problems, known core issues, inaccessible chain-plates, etc.)

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Cheoy Lee

Have you tried the owners' association for information?
