Center cockpits under 40ft?
I'm on the hunt for my next boat, and with a kid and dog, seems a center cockpit layout, especially with the private aft cabin, would be the way to go. The kid can have the aft stateroom, and the wife and I can have special adult fun time, and be able to raid the icebox whenever, without disturbing other occupants. We live in the San Juan Islands of Washington, and while I have a boat currently, my cal-20 just isn't big enough for 3+ dog and gear. We will sail and weekend cruise/camp year long, so the walk-thru to the aft cabin is important... It rains alot here in the fall and winter months, and we would like to also spend summers in Alaska, so I may continue to commercial fish, and have home not be a thousand miles away. I figure sailing and motorig will be 60/40
Anyway
I was wondering if you guys can help add to my list of center cockpits under 40 foot... Not too concerned about quality or sailability, we are just making a list of boats to compare liveability and layouts for now.
So far, I have
S2 9.2c (so far the winner)
Oday 32,37,39
Coronado 32,35 (iron keels.... Barf)
Columbia 36
......?
What can you guys think of?

Re: Center cockpits under 40ft?
I have been very fortunate to purchase a not so common center and aft cockpit layout with private aft main cabin, and a midships private bunk cabin, having center and aft cockpits I find has some great advantages, including privacy.Only a minimal disadvantage in overall room as it's a big volume yacht for a 39.
Cheoy Lee offshore 39 (Ray Richards), although I think only 11 were made, so may have trouble getting hold of one, LOL.

Morgan Out Island 36. Maybe the roomiest 36' boat ever built and very shallow draft. Trade off it doesn't point that well.
Pearson built a CC 39
O'Day 32 and 37.

Inside passage, gulf islands, San Juans, biggest crossing would be the queen charlottes, if i felt bawlzy id make the run from southeast to prince william sound maybe a summertime overnighter or two out on the Washington coast on a tuna trip but doubtful.
I have a strong distaste for iron keels, never had to deal with one gone wrong, but I've worked in boatyards and heard stories, while my cal-20 has one, and I owned a Santana 27 for a while, I have been fortunate enough to only get boats with the keels already fixed with epoxy and new bolts and the works... Not really in my reality to do keel work. Engine rebuild, sure... Structural or keel work. Fuhghettaboutit.

There aren't many around, but a Fantasia 35 fits your criteria.
Something to think about with the dog, center cockpit jobs under 40 feet tend to have very steep companion ways, so you'll be lifting Rover up and down the stairs every time he has to pee or bark at sea gulls.

Bavaria 38 is the nicest boat I have ever seen for layout, functionality, safety and joinery! And singlehanded ability!

Re: Center cockpits under 40ft?
Yeah, the dog may not be so big on the CC. Also, plenty of aft cockpit 2-cabin boats with lots of privacy in both cabins, and you can get a sugar-scoop stern.
I understand the notion of security that a CC may provide, but lots of folks (even some with kids and dogs) sail with aft cockpits, and the occupants don't constantly end up in the water. You may be unnecessarily limiting your search.
You say you are also looking at Alaskan waters - a pilothouse or completely enclosed cockpit may be in the cards. Given the time you estimate you may be motoring, you could even consider some motorsailors, although most folks find them limited in sailing ability.
Just some food for thought.

Re: Center cockpits under 40ft?
The Endeavour 38 is a nice layout and actually sails! Was looking at several before deciding on the Endeavour 37 A plan because we liked the huge cockpit and great room in the salon. Bedroom absolutely sucks tho on the 37, still dreaming of that center aft bed of the 38, but we are not living on the 37. Our neighbor has a 38 and it does very well on lake Ponchatrain and the gulf.
