That's a RADAR. Old RADARs had a cowling over them to reduce glare for daytime use. The picture they painted was most brilliant immediately following the sweep and then would fade off until the next sweep. They required a lot more skill and concentration to use than modern LCD displays.
The cowling could also help to maintain night vision by not throwing backscatter all over the bridge/RADAR station when not in use.

Towards the smaller end of the spectrum- I had a Carter Passage 33. The aft cabin was a bit tricky getting into especially if you have back problems, but I assume neither your kid or dog do. Great boat.

Some more options:
Vanguard 38 (Netherlands, steel)
SeaRunner trimaran (glass on ply)

My point is, Id rather check.with the experts, and ask questions if somebody posts about a boat i potentially would like to know more about. Doubt somebody would post about a junk boat, at least here you get a more neutral opinion vs having to contact a broker to get a question answered.

Most, but not all, Westerly Oceanlords, a nominal 41 feet, have island beds down the back.

Najad 411 may have the aft layout you want. It is 'just' some inches longer than 40' though.

... Cheers! If they do have back problems, you still can them into the aft cabin provided they join the "Inversion Table" cult but I doubt dogs are welcome in that sect

Re: Center cockpits under 40ft?
I'm a few months late to this thread, but in any case, I have a Nicholson 38 ketch, which is super. More information at nicholson38.org. Only around 140 of these were built, but they are rock solid.
The center cockpit is really secure - we sailed her from Seattle north as far as Glacier Bay, and handled the weather - rain and cold - very well.
She handles heavy seas and winds very well, and being a ketch there are a lot of sail plan options (which is part of the fun).
