Re: Center Cockpits - Still Popular ?

I am aware that Jeaneau used some Kevlar in their bows but wouldn't you agree that for the most part the materials are same old same old!

The underlying materials arent that much different, design is tighter, closed mould and resin infusion is different. Much is the same, some is different. The end result is a boat typically tougher then the skipper, thats all that really matters.

I agree that for the most part the boats are tougher than the skipper, well you and I anyways, LOL. That said if I were sailing the Southern ocean I would much prefer to be in an early 80's Beneteau 42 or 456 as those boats were really built tough.

quite frankly if I was in the Southern Ocean, I wouldn't want any Benny, young or old!. I have owned two BTW, I prefer the Jeanneaus to sail, but don't like the light interiors,

Actually the old Bavaria Oceans series was a very strong boat.

Must be a lot of boats that are tougher than the skipper, seeing the number of boats that have sailed themselves to a comfy beach after being abandoned at sea. Some production boats, some racing boats and a few cruising boats have made the trip unescorted.

Re: Center Cockpits - Still Popular ?

I had a real hard look at a mid 80's Beneteau First 42 and it was very well built but I don't think that type of construction these days lends itself to mass production. I'd take one of those anywhere with some proper refitting.

LOR57 For sure...I remember a Maple Leaf 42 that was abandoned off the Wash/Oregon coast (that place has a well deserved rep) that showed up in Hawaii many months later with the bikes still strapped to the side rail..the boat was in excellent condition or so it was reported. Too many winnie sailors these days, LOL

yeah sailed a few, can never warm to that reversed transom. not a bad boat. my personal preference is a Jeanneau 42DS or 39i performance rigged.

Re: Center Cockpits - Still Popular ?

I love my Bristol 45.5 . Pretty boat if you like the traditional look. Even the 43.3 is nice . The 51.1 is amazing , there was one at last years spring boat show in Annapolis, I had 3 looks at it but settled for the 45.5 and am very happy . This is my second center cockpit boat over 45 feet.

Regards

That Bristol 45.4 is a very pretty boat, you made me google it to get a look, thought you might post a good pic.
Is that aft cabin a double and a single?

Sorry, yes she is a center cockpit boat, she has a double / single aft cabin very similar to a Hallberg Rassy if you go into my profile you will find a few pics of her on the inside. Very comfortable boat in any seas, good Ted hood design .

Re: Center Cockpits - Still Popular ?

There seem to be as many variables between center cockpit boats as there are between those with center and aft cockpits! I think it's best to evaluate the individual vessel with an awareness of your individual needs.

Re: Center Cockpits - Still Popular ?

Hello from George. I recently acquired a Brewer 12.8 center cockpit. As Im 76 and wife does not sail I bit off more than I can chew'-- therefore I will be selling it soon after I fix it up. I have a nice dock in Clearwater FL and it will be there in late Feb after new centerboard is installed. The previous owner cruised islands intermittently for 12 years and its well set up for a cruising couple. If interested PM me.
