Catalina 38 vs. Ericson 32-3

The particular boats and a 1983 Catalina 38 and a 1988 Ericson 32-3. We're looking at buying either of theses two boats and are a little torn between them.

We're based down in Southern California and our primary use would be family coastal cruising with overnight trips to Catalina every so often. Our two sons are interested and have longer trips in mind with some off shore sailing (under 100 miles most likely), trips to the Channel Islands, down into Mexico.

We want the boat to easily sleep a family of 4, be easy to sail (two sons have some experience sailing and racing smaller boats), handle 20-30 knots of wind with relative ease, and have a good future resale value.

All thoughts and opinions welcome.

I'd jump on the S&S Cat 38. It's a very nice IOR coastal cruiser.

A survey will reveal which is the bargain. Does the Catalina have the gas engine? That was standard in 83. The tankage is very small by modern standards, both fuel and water. Maintenance and regular upgrades are vital if you don't want to do it all yourself.
