Re: Catalina 27

This brochure says 8’10”.......the company that built and marketed them should know. Not road legal without an oversized permit in the U.S..

Re: Catalina 27

They are slightly over width but nobody cares round here. I've moved mine across state lines without problems.

However it's not really a trailer sailer like my Catalina 22. It is heavy, I use a heavy 3/4 ton pickup to move her. She is very difficult to launch and retrieve, even if your ramp is deep enough. I recommend using a lift if possible.

Thx-Ace

Depends what you mean.

Most provinces and U.S. states routinely issue annual oversize permits. The Ontario ones are expensive, CAN$488 per year. (Oversize/overweight Vehicles manual).

Many if not most boats, when trailered, are somewhat wider than the beam listed in their specifications. For example, the trailer for my Hunter H26, which is specified to be 8'6" abeam, has 2" diameter guide posts to either side through which the boat must pass when launched or landed, for an overall width just shy of 9'.

Enforcement is variable. I am just south of the Ontario border and will let you speculate as to whether I pay for the $80 oversize permit offered in the jurisdiction where I keep my boat.

The greater problem in your case is one of draft. Except for the Great Lakes, most boat ramps are too shallow.

Re: Catalina 27

Yes, they are trailerable, but make sure you have some athletic friends to help you drop and raise the mast. Practice on a 22 Catalina on a cold, windy and rainy day so you know how to do it without dropping it! And raise/lower the mast on the trailer, not in the water! Others are correct, very hard to find a ramp that will work for you. Best method is to find a dry rack marina with forklift to splash you.
