We use to have an Islander
44, Bill Lapworth design; same vintage/designer/similar design as Cal 43. The Cals were used in a big way on the Transpac races from LA to Hawaii
. We sailed our Islander
from SF to Hawaii
, throughout the Hawaiian Islands and all through the Pacific. We sold
here here in NZ. She was a lovely, quick boat. She was slender (which made her quick) and she could point like nobody's business.
The drawbacks were: small interior
space (being older and slender), tender
, and we really needed to beef her up before going offshore
. For example, the deck
fitting separated and we did the work
ourselves. This was No. Fun. But we did it. Our boat also suffered alot (and I do mean alot) of blisters
. We finally got the job done proper here in NZ.
Sailing performance - excellent. Cruising - worked for us but at this point I'd like something a bit roomier.
Hope this helps.
