We use to have an
Islander 44, Bill Lapworth design; same vintage/designer/similar design as Cal 43. The Cals were used in a big way on the Transpac races from LA to
Hawaii. We sailed our
Islander from SF to
Hawaii, throughout the Hawaiian Islands and all through the Pacific. We
sold here here in NZ. She was a lovely, quick boat. She was slender (which made her quick) and she could point like nobody's business.
The drawbacks were: small
interior space (being older and slender),
tender, and we really needed to beef her up before going
offshore. For example, the
deck to
hull fitting separated and we did the
work ourselves. This was No. Fun. But we did it. Our boat also suffered alot (and I do mean alot) of
blisters. We finally got the job done proper here in NZ.
Sailing performance - excellent. Cruising - worked for us but at this point I'd like something a bit roomier.
Hope this helps.
