C&C Redwing 30 Questions
Hello,
I've recently had a look at a C&C Redwing 30 and was wondering if there was anyone that could spare some wisdom.
Here is a list of issues I found:
Rudder seems to not be perpendicular to the hull.
Cracks in the where the keel meets the hull (keel bolts look fine)
Questionable through-hulls.
Anti fouling coating coming off.
Possible soft spot on deck.
Old screw holes on deck need to be fixed properly.
2/6 chain plates leak.
2/4 deck drains leak into cabin. (bilge had about 3 inches of water, boat has been sitting for over 6 months)
Need some new hoses.
Engine needs new belt.
The owner insist that I will be wasting my money having a survey done. Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated. Thank you.
And because everyone loves pictures:

I can take care of most of the issues. It's the crack at the keel joint that bothers me. The owner says this is just from the keel flexing while under sail and isn't a structural issue. I'm hoping to find out if he is right or not here. As for the price, we have met a $10500.

Also the cabin space on the redwing is relatively small compared to other boats. Anyone else living on a redwing?

Re: C&C Redwing 30 questions
Sometimes the paint cracks at the joint. I'm not familiar with the model, but a generic check is to closely inspect the internal structure for any cracks or Delam of the glass. Google the Catalina smile and you'll see a lot of examples of the same sort of crack around the keel.

Gas engine. If it's not an anchor now it will be shortly. The rest looks primarily cosmetic. Old boats need lots of upgrading to remain safe and fun. If you don't have lots of cash and time buy something you can afford. Bigger is not necessarily better and it is always more expensive.

Re: C&C Redwing 30 questions
If i am in your shoes i run away!! this is not the popular c c keel smile, seems to me a Project, this boats are balsa cored to the bones , i own in the past a 40 c&c and i know by experience the crack at the fwd edge its a c&c normal ocurrence , but in the picture looks like a collision or grounding, antifouling removal in the área and a good lookout inside in the tabbing and stringers before to make any offert, the deck could be rotted as well. just saying..

Any time a seller says "wasting your money with a survey" my BS alarm rings loudly. Why should he care about your money? Methinks he fears what a surveyor might find and report.
Cheers,
Jim

Re: C&C Redwing 30 questions
Its a pretty quick, good boat with a nice PHRF rating.. but if i was you i would definitely get a survey done, a while back i almost bought a boat in dangerously bad shape, it looked good from the outside...

I second this! As soon as a seller starts trying to talk me out of a survey I hear all sorts of alarm bells going off. First among them: what is he trying to hide? Find the best surveyor you possibly can and have him go over that boat with a fine tooth comb!

Re: C&C Redwing 30 questions
$10,500? There is one listed eleven days ago on sailboatlistings that looks in much better shape for $5,900.
You are looking at a boat with deck core issues, possibly comprimised steering and questionable keel joint, among all the other systems that need updating. Those are some major issues and there are plenty of boats in that price range that don't have those issues.
Those are major issues that YOU have found and would scare most sailors away. What could a surveyor find that would scare you away?

Re: C&C Redwing 30 Questions
Owned and sailed hull #69 for 10 years. Faster than more modern 30s, handled better than anything else I have owned, but bobbed like a duck. Rudder post is off-vertical with bronze bushings pressed into the f/glass tube. Always showed the hull/keel joint, never leaked. Balsa in cabin top around handrail fastenings was mush, and fixed ports always leaked. Not much room inside. Fitted a Volvo 2002, 18 hp, in place of A4. Hinterhoeller (sp) built tough.

Re: C&C Redwing 30 Questions
where are you located? I have a good friend who has a paceship 32 in Michigan which is 4 times the boat you are looking at and you can buy it for perhaps half that. excellent condition as well, plenty of new sails too. boat of the year once when new, great boat

Re: C&C Redwing 30 Questions
Being a first time buyer I'm not sure which issues are serious. I can take care of smaller jobs but after hearing what everyone else is saying, I'm definitely going to walk away from this one. Thanks to all of you for your help!
