Buying in Canada

Hi everyone:
I'm new to the discussion board, so I apologise for sounding a little green here.

I am looking to buy a boat in Canada and shipping it to Asia, where I live.

What is the proceedure to buy in Canada? I am dealing with the sellers broker directly and I'm wondering if it's prudent to engage a solicitor or lawyer to ensure the boat is unemcumbered and the transaction goes smoothly.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

Yes, presuming you are undertaking a long-distance purchase (boat in Canada, you in Singapore), I’d hire both a surveyor and a buyer’s broker (or lawyer).
Any deposit should be secured in a trust acount.

I concur that you need representation, a surveyor definitely, and I would suggest a lawyer (solicitor) rather than a buyer's broker, as they will have access to security documentation that a buyer's broker may not. Also, see if it is possible to buy the boat using a Letter of Credit rather than pre-payment. That way you will have some recourse if the boat is not as described, or just does not arrive.

Thanks for the advice. Hired a lawyer and it was the best thing I ever did. He brought "power" to the table and saved me a heap of money. He has assisted in each step, as this was quite a complex deal, given the boat was being purchased for export. - Yes, I bought the boat! She's beautiful.
