Broker recommendation for Rhode Island

After years of lurking, it’s finally time for my first boat. Planning to do family sailing/coastal cruising. I learned on a Sonar with my wife and took some classes on that and a Sun Odyssey 45. I’ve finally saved enough pennies for my own, in the 31-35’ (used) range.

Does anyone have recommendations for brokers in Rhode Island?

I can recommend CAHOON YACHT BROKERAGE in S. Chatham, Mass 02659-0111
Phone 508 237 2775. One of the most straightforward and honest brokers I have ever dealt with. He will travel to you as necessary. I have purchased and sold through him and I am presently working with him for my next boat. He works both sail and power vessels equally well.

When you are happy with your broker and your purchase, please send your recommendations to me. I am also in Rhode Island, and will be buying my first 25'-35' sailboat when I retire in a few years. Thanks, good luck and have a great 2021!

Can't help you with the broker, but if you need a reference on an awesome surveyor let me know. I used a gentleman out of Riverside RI that was very knowledgeable, thorough, and his post survey customer support was outstanding.

Alan Baines of Berthon USA has helped me with a couple of searches and purchases. He is very good and fair. He also seems to have access to a lot of boats that are premarket and very high quality boats.

I also recommend Alan Baines, Berthon, USA in Newport. I bought a new Najad 440 from him in 2006 and have been happy with the boat and more to the point I thought Alan gave me good advice.

Re: Broker recommendation for Rhode Island

Thanks, everyone. Rocks, I will eventually need a surveyor so thanks for that!

Ex, I will.

Ok, super naive question: I have several good options through your kind recommendations. Do I speak with them and pick one with whom to work, or do I work with two or three until we narrow down to the “right” listing one of them finds? I’m not sure what the expectation/norm is and don’t want to yank people around.

For a buyer's broker I'd work with one: they all have access to substantially the same listings, so setting them against each other seems like poor sportsmanship to me at least. I'd call a couple of them to get a sense of how the fit is - this is a real thing, in addition to making sure they understand your experience level, budget and goals, and are capable of advising you with those in mind - and then ask that one to start putting together a roster of boats for you to look at.

Re: Broker recommendation for Rhode Island

Second ChrisJD's perspective. You could compare brokers to realtors; they all have access to the same inventory and databases of listings, so it really boils down to the right "fit".
