Bristol 24 by Accident!?!??

I bid on a Bristol 24 on Ebay the other day and, as I planned, lost the bid. I put in $760.00 because the low bid was really, really low. Too low, if you know what I mean.

The person that won, evidently, was out of contact, because the seller (Boat Angel Ministries) sent me an email and sold me the boat. They said the other bidder did not respond withing their 24 hour window and they could not reach them.

So, I guess I am now the accidental owner of a nice looking old Bristol 24. Hope she sails as good as she looks!

She's about a 3-1/2 hour drive from here or a good day's sail from my mooring.

I really like the look of the old Bristols with that full keel and the trunk for the outboard.

I'm not sure if she's floating or in dry dock right now. If moored, I'll sail her to Muscongus Bay. If she's out of the water, I'll have to trailer her home.

Do you think she'd fit on my Tanzer 22's trailer?

I did the same thing on a Kiwi 30. Caused a lot of problems in my marriage when my wife found out I'd bought another boat. Worked out okay as I managed to sell the boat for nearly what I had in it and am still married. Damn, divorces are expensive. Did beat you on distance from home, was only 2,200 miles across the ocean. Boat Angel and Ebay are a dangerous combination.

A Bristol 24 was the first boat I owned and I still have fond memories cruising in her. Did a lot cruising in her too. Nice headroom and I'm 6'2". It has everything you need for cruising and nothing you don't. Sturdy as hell. Solid fiberglass hull as I recall. Check the chain plates make sure there is no water leakage that is softening up the wood bulkhead where they are attached. Hope you have a great time on yours as I did on mine.

My wife was a bit upset with me buying another boat, too. But, she knows that it is a great price and likes the life lines. For some reason, she is still nervous about sailing with me (funny story I'll post sometime).

Should be a fun boat, though. Did I mention that it has a 2007 Honda 9.9? I think that alone is worth the price....

Right now, it is in Bass Harbor, ME at a marina. I'll find out tomorrow exactly where and if it's still in the water or not. I kind of hope that it is afloat - nice way to have an adventurr.

I "accidentally" bought a Chevy SSR on Ebay a few years back.

The price looked too low, but was from a dealer and had a clear Carfax.

I've been driving it for over 6 years now and can still sell it for almost what I bought it for. My youngest son has generously offered to keep it in his garage while we are gone.

I have three boats and WE are looking for our "home", so my wife would have been "oh goodie"! It is ALL I can do not to bid on a few of those boat angel auctions.

Planning to sail her home Thursday/Friday! She's in the water still, so, there's a nice little adventure ahead. It's going to be great to cruise a bit of the Maine coast this time of year. Taking my 15 year old son along. Sounds like great times!

It's going to be a beautiful cruise! I wish I could spend some real time slipping around.

I'll be taking off mid day on Thursday and will need to anchor or grab a mooring for the night somewhere. I'm going plot a course and then see what the Taft's have to say about anchorages along the way.

Great way to end the season (which would be REALLY nice if it were a lot longer!)
