Bought a 30' Newport Sloop

Can any body give me any thoughts about what faces me?
Sailed gp14's lasers and cats but thats about it, Whats in store i ask you?

Not familiar with this particular boat but I would guess pretty much what faces anyone that buys a used boat. How old is it, what kind of condition? Did you have it surveyed before purchase and what did it say?

To sail safely some of the things you need to check:

rigging
sails
basic hull and deck structure
anchor and lines
engine
wiring, plumbing, galley

Go through the boat and all systems. Make lists. Post more questions.

Join a boat club and get involved - lots of helpful people. Mine is 30 years old and was in poor cosmetic condition so I had the opportunity to go over everything - and make systems work for me (lines back to cockpit, replace clutches, winch positioning, painting and woodwork). Great stuff for getting to know the boat! Look at other similar baots and sail on them if possible to see what works and what doesn't!

its 1974, the motors good but the sails need repair.
had my boss whos a surveyer look at it and say all wood and hull ok, maybe change prop but other than than ok.
ive just brought it and am looking forward to learning life on the water.
Ive been on the water working for years but never lived on it all the time.

Living in the vancouver area and will be looking for somewhere to put it but its a mightmare. might look into anchor mostly.

Will have to install shower, solar panals the list goes on but its gonna be a class learning curze!!!! YEHHH!!!!

Very comfortable boat; I had one for 8 years (1980 model) and sailed it all over Southern California. Gary Mull design built in Harbor City, CA, near where I was living at the time, so even visited the factory. You should have lots of fun setting it up to suit you; there are still a lot of them on the West Coast, even though the factory is long gone.

I have a '74 Newport 30 Mk II, as well..bought it last year. Didn't go out looking for a Newport, but couldn't pass it up, for the price (distress sale by FO). Spent the last year getting to know the boat & am happier now than when I bought her. Stable sailing platform, comfortable, roomy below, huge v-berth..she has the Volvo-Penta diesel, wheel steering, roller furling..I don't know about a shower, though..it would take some major mods to fit a shower into the head, including a shower sump. Feel free to PM me if you want more specifics, but if this is your "first time" you made a good choice..she'll be gentle with you

My Da d had a Newport 30 growing up. A lot of boat for a 30 footer. Good Luck getting it set up as you would want it. I was given this piece of advice on this forum and did not listen. I wish I had. Don't make any big expenditures on the boat until youhave had it for a year. From there you will be in a much better position to tell what you "need" for the boat.

Gonna do 2weeks a month in false creek and two up the indian arm, should be intersting.

Have you had a chance to sail much in your Newport yet? I was hoping to get a Newport 30 in a couple of years and I was wondering how you liked it so far and if you have any pros/cons or suggestions for what to expect with that particular boat.

My buddy has sailed a Newport 30 for the last few years and has nothing but good things to say about it. However he's now gone over to the dark side and has bought a stink pot. His Newport is on the market. Check out this site for some pix:

I've owned, sailed and lived aboard my Newport 30 for over three years now. Singlehand a lot. Comfortable living for one and the occasional crew member (girlfriend). Good Old Boat once said that if you find one with a solid hull they are worth the investment. Ted Brewer (boat designer) said they are in his top five of 30 foot coastal cruisers.
