book shelves

Hi All
Part of our preparation for heading south next year is to make and fit some book shelves. Any ideas for keeping the books on the shelves and stopping them flopping from side to side.
Many thanks

Re: book shelves

Sort of an oblique non-answer: We've been switching to e-books. Haven't replicated the whole library yet, and won't do that with some anyway, but new acquisitions and all our systems documentation (owners manuals, etc.) are becoming electronified.

I did still need some overflow area for physical books. Used a milk crate as the "book case" (located on a shelf) and a bungee or two as the fiddles. Wallah.

Re: book shelves

Ian,

On my boat I have one of the shelves with fixed vertical dividers at various widths... This way you can usually find a combination that will fit fairly firmly side to side... The front edge has a fiddle for small to medium motion, and a bar that slips in slots for bigger seas...

Hope this helps!

I don't know how people keep books on shelves. I always get mold.

Re: book shelves

Yes, mainly e-books and -manuals. Building a book shelve with removable front bar for some really important ones however. For Calder's mechanical manual, Cornell's world cruising routes and the like. Plan to keep it filled, so no flopping from side to side.

Re: book shelves

A sliding-panel bookrack will hold them upright, but you'll still need a removable bar across the front to hold them in when you're heeling. Something simpler than this, but it gives you the idea:
