Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

The Hake Seaward 46RK is an unusual and interesting boat design. I like it. I do think it is a very good boat for this thread, as it designed for the shallow water area cruising. The photo showing it pulled up to the beach always gets me thinking of the possibilities. Thanks for adding the photos, video, and data.

Signed up just today.
I just bought a Sandpiper 32' Sharpe. The board up draft is under 24" loaded for unknowing. Bilge boards down. Five feet of draft.
The rig is set up like a old windsurfing. I an mot sure if I like it yet. Since I just bought the boat last week.
The Preston sharpies are not popular for some reason. But we fell in love with the ability to put the bow on a beach. With a stern anchor to pull off the sand.
My thought is. There is a lot more 2' and 4' of water out there. Than those nice comfy marinas.
I will learn how post photos asap.HR

Well, welcome here! Are you on the Chesapeake? I have a soft spot for sharpies because as a youngster I had a plan to build one for sailing the SF bay and delta.

Your rig is well regarded by those with experience using it. I think you will come to appreciate it's strong points.

A good looking boat to me.

Check out the "around boom furling". Very unusual, and wondering how it works. Freestanding masts, so do they rotate? ...Edit to add, that seems unlikely.

Edit to add again, .... further googlin' and I read about fafner bearings, greased partners, teflon sleaves, etc. But no pics. Maybe they do rotate.

The Seaward 46RK is a masterpiece, but finding a used one would be difficult. As of last year only 7 were built. There is one for sale, listed on Yachtworld for $690K.

There are plenty of 32 and 28RKs to be found however, and the prices are very reasonable.

...presume you mean around the mast?...fairly sure they do rotate, look where they enter the deck.. I'm curious about the fitting for the topping lift at the head.... very interesting...

lol. Yes, around mast furling. Brain finger disconnect.

Upon further reading I found reference to maintenence and upgrade of the rotation mechanicals. Never new this existed so learned something today.

If I could ask a question of you folks. Is the keel depth as critical in the pacific, say South Pacific, and Alaska, as it is in the gulf?or perhaps the med?

We are in Holiday, Florida. Just a couple blocks from the Anclote.
I bought the boat in St Pete. It was interesting motoring up the interglacial all the way up with a 5hp nissan outboard. And headwind all the way!
Well, Lets see if the photos worked! (Not all photos are mine. There from previous owner)

I would like to hear from anyone who sails a Sandpiper. I need all the help I can get!

Your boat sounds very interesting to me, as Sharpies are an unusual class of boat and have a special place in boat design.

I hope you will post lots of photos (inside and out) of your boat. As you are new to CF there is a very helpful video on Youtube that demonstrates how to post photos in your photos by using the "Advanced" posting method. The video walks you through the process so you can post up to 12 photos per post.

I am no expert and you are asking about a very big part of the world. But...
In general, NO. In most threads in CF where draft of boats is discussed, the typical opinion from very experienced sailors (like the Cates) is that deep draft boats are OK on the Pacific.

Of course a shallow draft boat does offer some ability to go to shallower lagoon anchorages, but most Pacific areas have deeper draft than the Florida Keys or SW Florida or the Bahamas, at least as far as general sailing destinations are concerned.

Thanks for posting the photos and bringing up the rotating mast furling, which IS unusual. Looks like another boat (and those photos too) should be added to the thread about "Boats with Freestanding Masts" as it qualifies and is an interesting example.
