Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Baltic 42 DP
$11,843 Listed price: €10,000

Interesting boat. I think it's located in Southampton UK, but the broker appears to be in Spain. The interior seems to be in decent shape despite what I would have expected considering the price. It also looks like it's been stored for a while and damage from the humidity is apparent, but nothing serious. There were a couple of viewing dates that have passed, so maybe it's still available, maybe not.

To check if I'm just being delusional I poked around and it seems like most boats of this size/age have a minimum of 40HP. I found 47, 50, and even 60 HP motors in this size of boat.

The link you provided discusses the loss through transmission, etc. In the car world that percentage of loss can vary from 15 to 25 %. If the 40HP is reduced by 25% you're looking at 30HP.

I thought I was underrating the torque of the e-motor as that's what gets things moving so took a look at that.

This link shows a Westerbeke 40 with torque ranges from 60-80

https://www.westerbeke.com/advanced%20specs/w40.pdf

This link for e-motors in general shows a at 20HP it has around 60 lb ft of torque, so definitely within range, but also maybe on the low end. EDIT: this is only a reference and I can't confirm the data or how it relates to the motor in question.

https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/e...pm-d_1503.html

And last but not least, the link they provided in the ad (below) states the recommended HP swap range of 15-25 HP.

https://www.emarineinc.com/Elco-EP-2...Electric-Motor

To summarize, it seems like a 20HP e-motor MAY be able to push this boat but that's going to be at the upper limits of that motor (which is not good) and given the e-motor manufacturers recommendations for HP swap ratings this boat is in fact underpowered if it originally came with a 40+ HP motor.
I am not a big fan of the electric sailboat schemes. But I offer this experience.

I have a 33’ steel cutter, 16,000 pound displacement, powered by a 35 year old (but good) 13hp Volvo MD-7A.

I get around. But I have also motored a long way at times. And it doesn’t take much for the engine to be almost completely ineffective. There have been rare occasions I wanted more power (dead calm with 8’ following waves, hard to maintain adequate steerage to not broach). And I have run WOT for extended periods.

My points are:
Many boats come with fairly liberal horse power, you MAY be able to get by with substantially less than mfg provided.
As you wander further afield electric becomes less and less attractive. Especially in colder climates where you need cabin heat.

Day sailing the Chesapeake? Perfect!
Bahamas? Pretty OK.
Maritime Canada? Seasonal day sailer.

7’ 2” draft is gonna make that a tough sell.

If that is not a restriction then you have a good opportunity.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Upthread couple of weeks back I mentioned Souther Cross 35 that is not actively being advertised. The owner has shown active interest in selling the boat, more than I had expected.

This boat has done a circumnavigation under a previous owner and seems to be in reasonable shape, the owner day sails it occasionally. It is obviously in need of TLC, for example the exterior bright work has been neglected. Yet the boat outwardly seems sound. I think its a nice boat.

Due the location (upper Albremarle Sound - fresh water) there are no haul out facilities within a 2 to 3 day sail. The Owner wants to sell the boat with minimum hassle, that is important to him. In short, no out of water survey.

The boat will go for well under the price limit to fit this thread, IF you are willing to buy without an out of water survey.

I am reposting this because the owner actively demonstrated his willingness to sell, I think he is serious. He is not looking to make a killing, but to be out of the responsibility so he can concentrate on other issues.

I have no financial interest, just trying to help a guy out.

PM me if you are interested.

We agree that boat use determines power needs. If I were just going to tool around the east coast or maybe head to Bahama's for a season the motor in the boat we're discussing would probably work just fine but if you're headed for true offshore than no way. But that doesn't mean an electric isn't a good option. The current technology is there it's just new and expensive. Would I build an electric boat for high latitude - absolutely. Could I afford it - nope, but I could probably afford to build an electric setup for equatorial cruising, sun and wind power are cheap

I'm currently debating the next few years of my life and I'm pretty sure I'll be buying a boat that will first take me on the great loop and then maybe some carribbean sailing, if it has a perfectly good diesel engine I wouldn't touch it but if I found the right boat I would absolutely convert it to electric.

Here's a good find in Seattle, if I was ready I would seriously consider this boat.

Is the boat actually on fire? Propane tank on the inside?

Bl**dy hell - that’s just down the road from me and a cracker of a deal! 7ft is quite deep on the draft but even still, someone got a bargain.

That boat looks like a complete nightmare.

It's actually amazing how one photo of the galley is so indicative of the state of the rest of the boat.

I'm looking to get a boat to restore, any tips on what to look would be helpful

She’s described as “he is urgently looking for a new owner who will invest some time to make her as glorious again as she was in the past. She needs a makeover”

There’s another 30-40k !! The teak deck probably also needs to be replaced there’s another 20 k

Boats are cheap for a reason there are no “ deals”
