"Fiberglass-Epoxy over Cemented steel"

What? No granite? You call this a solid boat?!

This is one where even if they were paying $6000 to take it I'd run.

Run far away, unless you want to live aboard and not move it. (You will still be faced with the disposal problem that the present owner has when you are done with it.)

This boat is a project-and-a-half, imo. There are literally thousands of similar propositions, many would be more worth "restoring".

Run far, far, away!

Disclaimer: We once bought a large steel boat, amateur build. It was a mistake; although we had our fun on it - it was mostly a learning process in humility and the proportion of sailing to maintenance was closer to zero than I recommend.
You guys are gonna have to learn this about Captn_Who: he wears the original pair of rose-coloured glasses!

(Just teasing you a bit, Who!)

There's no boat he can't find a bit of love for.

Not all cement boats are bad. These people seem pretty happy with theirs.

For that price and if I was in the area, it never hurts to take a look.

I'm not saying that I'd get it, but I would be tempted to look at it. If I was totally enamored with it, I'd probably take the effort to do the diligence on it. There's a lot of advice out there on purchasing a ferrocement boat and it's obviously extremely important to know what you're getting into. Ferrocement boats have been fraught with problems, but there are good ferro boats out there. Every boat I've owned in the past has been a project and I'm up for another one if it's the right one. There are reasons other than the building materials that I'm not interested in this vessel.

If people don't want me to post boats that pique my interest, then I'll stop. It does take a little effort and if I'm just irritating people, I'd prefer not to do that.

Not irritating at all, quite interesting in fact. The previous boat you posted looked like a very nice find.

I too have met ferro-cement boats that were fine.
There was that guy in BC, John Sampson, who was designing them and, I think building them for a while. We met him in the 90's. Some nice boats. There was an outfit in Britain called Windcrete or something like that building them in the 70's.

Still they have mostly had their day:

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

There could be good ferrocement boats. When I was hauled out last time there was a big ferrocement boat that had been there for some time, and I presume someone had plans to restore her, but what a mess. The steel rusting from within had peeled the whole hull apart. It left a big impression on me.

Greetings,

Did you get the price from the owner as it is not on that basic website?

Thanks.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

This is a good price for a 40 foot boat: $27.5K CAD (~$20K US).

1979 Morgan 40 North American

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-sailboat/osh...oat/1505631589

Poorly presented, few photos.

Good points: diesel, mainsail stack pack, nice interior.

Considerations: engine hours/condition? condition of gear and sails? small fuel and water tanks, bladder holding tank, unsuitable anchors, "ice box" may or may not be convertible to a fridge.

Note: this boat is in Canada, not far from Toronto. The US-Canada border is closed to non-essential travel.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

We are acrively looking for a 28-30 footer with a budget of <$15K. Ive owned plenty of budget boats and am no stranger to fixer-uppers, so we started at the low end of our budget.
I thought catalina 30s would be a safe bet but the older cheaper MkIs mostly came with Atomic 4s. We did find a decent MkII with 25 hp diesel, but it had sunk.on land and dirty, oily bilge water had all but ruined the low lying woodwork.
What we're finding in our price range are some nice boats that have been out of the water from a couple to several years. It would take a bit of work to get them ready to launch. Since we find ourselves in between boats in mid-season, we decided to look for sail-ready boats at the upper end of our budget. There again, some good prospects, but the quality is better with boats in the smaller end of our range.
We're going to look at a nice Pearson 31-2 today. It's just over our budget but it appears to be in great shape and ready to go. I dont want to jinx it by posting the ad here but if we pass i will do so.

You don't say where you are. In the Great Lakes area there are a number of very decent boats in your size and price range. On Canadian side or US side.
Good luck with your visit!
