Columbia 10.7

Steady's Notes

The photos of the boat show a typical coastal cruising boat, in what appears to be good condition. As with any boat, a survey is a good idea. Caveat Emptor.

I like what I see in the photos. There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page. This boat does have a few items that some cruisers want (GPS, RADAR, Refrigeration, Harken Furler, BBQ, Propane stove/oven).

The boat appears to be a typical "coastal cruiser." I noticed it has a somewhat unusual hull/keel shape. See the profile line drawing below.

This is the first boat of this type I have posted in this thread. I cannot tell from the photos if the interior has faux wood or "wood grain vinyl" or wood veneer, or a mix of all three, if that matters to the next buyer. I think the Vberth looks nicer than many low priced boats. The boat also has a teak+holly sole, which is nice on boats.

There were 200 of these boats built, as late as 1979. This one is from the last year of production.

My Disclaimers and Requests

I have no financial or other connection to this boat or the seller.
I have not seen this boat in person, nor have I sailed on it.
As with any boat, it is a good idea to research the design to learn about how they sail, common problems and owner opinions.
As with any boat, it is smart to have a qualified yacht surveyor perform a survey of the boat to assess its condition.
I am posting this to help others find boats. This one caught my eye, and I hope this thread helps others find a good fit for them.
I hope this thread proves helpful to CF Members. If so, let me know, as it is nice to know the time spent on it has helped others.
IF you purchase this boat, let me know (a PM would be OK).
IF you purchase this boat, I would enjoy seeing it, or going for a sail on it, if I am ever in your area.
IF you have a sister boat, I encourage to post some comments about it in this thread.
IF you own a similar or sister boat, I would enjoy sailing on it with you. Why? I enjoy sailing on a wide variety of boats and would like to get some time on many designs, including this one.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Brief Report:

"Bristol" (?) Bristol 35

Year built = 1972
Asking Price = $30,000

Steady's Notes:
1. Boat looks much cleaner and better condition than most boats this age. Someone has done a good job preparing it for sale with polish and cleaning. Interior looks good, etc. Of course this is just by looking at those photos, so as with any boat, get a professional survey and look for yourself and Caveat Emptor.

2. Broker's ad says that this boat has been upgraded over the years with $100,000 spent on it. It does appear to have some newer items, but nothing in the ad says the date of the upgrades (so ask).

Here is the link if you want to see it. Many photos.

This is a good example that even if you spend $100,000 on your boat, does not mean you can sell it for $100,000. It seems very reasonably priced at $30k asking. Many excellent features like davits, yanmar, windlass, self tailers, modest draft, and nice woodwork below.

This is a fine looking yacht. The sort of boat I would love to take on a Caribbean cruise. One day.

For the go small, go now set, or anyone who isn't drinking the bigger is better Kool Aid, at $14k CAD this Pearson Triton is a bargain considering what it's equipped with. I wouldn't complain much either about the Atomic 4 in this boat. $10,800 USD.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

I wasn't sure if this should go in the "close to free" thread, or here in the "under $30k" thread...so I'm posting in both, just in case.

Asking price is $5,000 USD, but ad says they are looking for offers for a quick sale. Boat located in Grenada.

Albin Vega 27, fully and seriously rebuilt for a round the world cruise...for example, it seems that all below the waterline through hull holes have been removed/sealed. The boat apparently has also been reinforced structurally. Comes with a long list of equipment for offshore. This is a very interesting boat.

https://m.blocket.se/stockholm/Albin....htm?ca=11&w=3

FROM THE AD (translated by google):

Hey!

We are now selling our Albin Vega 27, which took us from Sweden to Grenada in the Caribbean (where the boat is now). The boat is fully equipped for sailing around the world and is ready for use. We are in some time pressure and wish this process to go fast.

The boat is rebuilt with inspiration and help from Sven Yrvind. The following are done from 2015 to today:

· Reinforced mast shot and beam
· Reinforced longitudinal buckle and other shots
· No bottom penetrations, ie no holes below the waterline.
· The hull between the hull and the tire is laminated and all of the through-screws in the tire are exchanged so that nothing leaks from above.
· Windows replaced with plastic mounted outside so that they can not be pushed in.
· The seat well is remodeled to a tire and the inboard engine has been removed.
· The original rudder is firmly laminated and has been replaced with two rudders on the transom.
· Front door reinforced with carbon fiber.
· Rig: Reinforced rig fixings / fittings and steel rod, new wire and screwdrivers (2015)
· Targabåge (not stainless steel, painted and rusted in some places)

Equipment

provided : · Watermaker katadyn surviver 35 (not used, filters, hoses and gaskets must be replaced)
· Solar panels (providing up to 5 A charging), (2015)
· Satellite phone Iridium 9555
· VHF stationary with AIS receiver (2015)
· VHF Portable (2017)
· Engine Tohatsu sail Pro 6 hp (2015)
· life raft , 4 persons, plastimo, (2015)
· Plastimo (new 2015 first use 2018) with engine Seanovo 2.5 hp (2018)
· 2 pcs DELTA anchors (6 kg and 16 kg), (2015).
· Lead lina about 20 m, Kätting 50 m, (2015) unpacked descending ankarlina.
· Water Sack 50 L, (2018)
· Compass (2015)
· Safe Link R10 SRS * 2, (2015)
· PLB Emergency Transmitter (2015)
· An Electric Pump and Manual (2015)
· 2 L 25 L Water Drums, )

The estimated price is 40,000 SEK (but the boat will be sold to the highest or lowest bidder). Viktor is on board and can show the boat. Dan works on a boat in England and has reception at times. Try to call us and if it is not possible to send an email, we will take it from there. The boat's name is Sven.

Google needs to do a little more work on their translation software. I'd sure like to see the tiller and two rudder set-up. And the boat comes with tampons?

Sabre 28 1973 a good buy for 4K? Freshwater biat

Hello all. This is my first post. I am looking at soon purchasing a Sabre 28, 1973 (#20th built), orig atomic 4 ..looks well maintained but in need of tune up, and owner and a few yard folk say it runs well. Looks very clean and gold. ( fire retarder was oily thou?) On Lake Ontario. Prob not used much as owner of past 18 yrs sails well/ used to race it - motors out of marina mostly my guess. Older 6-12 yrs...but good sail plan ( 2 mains, 3 jibs, 1 spinnaker and pole). Tiller. Lead bolt keel & skeg hung. Boat looks in well maintained shape&on the hard now. Has forward shroud supports. Was In water last yr.
I’m nervous about engine age and due to limited $ can only afford 2-400$ to have some one look over the boat and motor for me. I have a few weeks window. 3 to 4 k is a great price for this quality of boat. ..but having to put in a new motor if this motor is dying/ dies will kill $$$ me. ( I have a 6hp 1 yr old outboard on my 23 Oday ( which I will sell)- but bit small for this boat on a Great Lake for new-ish sailor. And no outboard mount .
-I am thinking to share launch cost with seller to get boat in water and have engine checked best I can( find someone). Compression test, oil pressure, and ?????. If all good I’ll pay all launch cost as I need to rent slip for boat anyway when I go ahead and purchase
- do I just tap all round hull to check for issues?
- I’m willing to learn how to maintain atomic 4 gas engine. But this ones is 45 yrs old. eeek. Some web sites say it’ll go a long time and a rebuild is possible ( especially if I do some myself) for 2k.
- I’m a single gal and in 4 years my goal is to head home to Victoria bc Canada via intramural and some costal, Carib, and ??? ( slip fees w power and pool in Rio dulce Guatemala are 350$/mo!) Like the fact that monies over the next 4 yrs I dump into this boat can get me there, as it’s coastal- possible blue water quality...or at least have some good -ish resale.
Hoping any of you can advise me. Boat really looks ok and clean... just nervous about motor. If I need to add 2 -3k to it in 4 yrs as my ticket and movable home out of cold NE that’s ok.
- not sure if I feel nervous inside ( that’s a girl talking) because I’m going from 23 to 28 solo, or because it’s my first inboard and older ( but godly it seems) atomic gas .
Thank you in advance...really need some good advice here. If you live nearby in upstate ny I’ll pay you for a boat / motor eval if you are experienced .
Best, Robyn

To ROBYNREDSAIL:

Welcome Aboard CF!
You came to the right place (CF) to ask questions, though questions about engines are best asked in the subforum that is focused on Engines and Propulsion. Look for it on the list of forums here on this site.

The Atomic 4 engine is old. But many older boats still have them.
They have been written about before on CF. opinions are mixed.
Some members will likely add comments about them.

Good luck with your boat hunt and decision!

TO HAMBURKING:

That Albin 27 does sound well equipped for the price.
The extra gear alone would add up to a lot of money.

A Nautor Swan 36, the first I believe of the Swans, on craigslist with little info. In Seattle. Sure looked nice on the outside, $29,900

One thing about those I'd like to know is if the lead is encapsulated or not.
