Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

TO HAMBURKING,

That is a nice looking steel sailboat. Thanks for adding it to the thread mix.

I looked at all of the photos on the linked site (which is a good one for promoting a boat) . I think it looks very nice considering the type of boat (steel) and age, and especially at that low price.

What is the catch?
The ad says some hull work was done (patches one can presume) and that may indicate other issues (more thin plating elsewhere due to hidden corrosion). The "hidden" gotchas are what would concern me with any older steel hull boat. But, as has been discussed on CF many times, that is part of owning a steel boat. Some will have no problems, some will have hidden problems.

But, if properly surveyed by someone, and knowing that there are always risks with older boats, this boat could be a good candidate for a buyer who has a limited budget, and is willing to take some risk. As always, Caveat Emptor.
___________

I do like what in the photos, and will post a few more below.
I particularly like the cockpit and hard dodger, the interior wood finish work looks nice, and better than many steel boats.

I was looking at steel boats that size in Florida last year and that is a phenomenal list price, especially for a professionally built boat. I looked at boats listed for $40k that were unabashed 'projects' and sold for more than $20k. Almost want to borrow a car and drive out their to look at this thing!

Reviewing the pictures: there is water damage to the wood around the companionway and at least one of the bulkheads is delaminating. Some black spots on the floor, so she's definitely had water inside, probably fresh. Wonder what the bilge looks like...
At that price, I would expect it to be rough in places. But overall...a ton of boat for the money.

There are always people on here asking for a big ocean ready boat for next to no money...and here it is. Florida is a good place to refit and stock up for a Caribbean cruise. Hell, I'm tempted to call up a few friends and just GO...we could bum around for a year or two, then sell it again for whatever, or trade it for a red paperclip.

OK...we need 4 strangers with $5,000 each who want to go sailing and become youtube stars...who's in????

That equipment list, at used prices, would justify $18,000, and the ketch is free. ;-)

42 steel cutter could be just what we’re looking for. Will be in florida next week and if it hasn’t gone already will have a serious look.

Will report back.

Just for curiosity I would appreciate it if you report your findings. We have 2 Steel boats and spent a lot of time looking for Steel or aluminum boats on the East Coast some 8 or so years ago.

I have some strong feeling about Steel boats and the process to vet one for purchase. While I’m a hard steel fan I believe that most Steel boats do not make a good purchase. You have to be very selective and extremely diligent in examining the boat. I won’t go into it here and derail this thread but PM me if you want to chat.

Here's what looks to be one of the cleanest versions of a Bristol 32 out there. Ted Hood did himself proud when he designed this. One of the prettiest classic plastics around & perfect for Florida & the Bahamas with it's 3'7" draft. Getting one in this condition under $20,000 would be a score.

The Tartan 37 is a nice design.

I have no additional info on that particular boat. It is priced significantly lower then most Tartan 37s I have seen on the market. As with any boat, Caveat Emptor.

SCOUT30,

That is an outstanding find!

Thanks for adding it to the mix!

I think it is such a good example, I will do a full writeup to use as an example of the type. I will post that with some photos in a few minutes below this.

That is a beautiful boat, setup extremely well, in what appears to be excellent condition. The only change I would make would be to swap the older pressure stove for an origo (designed to fit the hole perfectly, BTW). Beautiful woodwork below, shallow draft, yanmar, and setup for true single handed sailing. It is great to see these boats. A good buy at any price!
