Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

What's your opinion on Bruce Roberts designs? I saw this 36 for sale for $29,900 in Texas. I see differing opinions, one being that it's slow. My son and I liked first looks and I'm looking for a liveaboard soon. Thanks!

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Hey there guys,

Not exactly sure how this thread works, but I'd like to give it a shot.

Been looking for an upgrade to my Catalina 30', been checking out the market daily and I keep finding myself back at the cutter ketch rig. This one in particular strikes my interest and is in my price range.

1976 Downeaster 38 Cutter Ketch Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

I know it's suppose to be <$30000, but I've talked with the guy to lowering it closer to that, because of my ambition to repower it.

Any thoughts? Any experience with the "classic" hull style? Or with the make?

I'm from Southern New England, so the Down East style boats have always interested me, whether it be power or sail. Was looking for some other opinions as well.

Was really just looking for all around feed back for this boat. She has all the electronics, liveability and sailability I believe I'm looking for, well for at least sometime.

Kind of looking for a rig that could hold me over for about 5 yearsish..

She'll be an old lady by then, but I've looked up the history on the boat, and she has been in Lake Champlain for most her life. All fresh water so that gives me hope! Also they say they tended to "overmake" these boats, and especially in that time era. I will still regardless get her surveyed.

I'm kind of on the edge so I'm really phishing for some thoughts on pushing me too or from this vessel. I really do love it..so far, but it does seem a bit plasticy for me.

Do you guys perhaps have other suggestions?

Thanks for all your input in advanced!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I used to charter one, sloop, quite a bit, many moons ago. I liked it a lot, it is a sturdy, reliable design, well built and had better performance than I was expecting. Bluewaterboats has a write-up of the 32 but not the 38, not sure why. Maybe it needs more votes there.
The Downeaster 32 Sailboat : Bluewaterboats.org
The engine had good access too. I'd definitely get a look at one. Fresh water is a plus. After you've had to take care of 40 feet of teak, a little more plastic doesn't seem so bad! Make sure it has a good engine! Don't shop till you are ready to buy though. Here is one that I saw recently locally here in L.A.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Endeavour 37 "B" Plan

1980 sloop
"B Plan" is a traditional layout with quarter berth.

Asking Price = $29,900
Location = St. Augustine FL
________________

Steady's Notes

The Endeavour 37 is a boat I would like for a comfortable shallow draft cruiser for Florida or coastal cruising. It is relatively roomy and would make a nice liveaboard boat.

Is it a "Blue Water Boat?"
That is debatable. But, I have sailed 2,500 miles from Hawaii to California on an Endeavour 37 (A Plan) and found it to be comfortable sailing with a nice interior and a very large cockpit, with long flat cockpit seats on which you could sleep. Despite sailing in a gale on that voyage, I never felt unsafe in the boat. If asked to take a similar voyage on a similar boat (that is well prepped for long distance voyaging) I would go again.

One feature I like on the Endeavour 37 is the multiple (10!) opening portlights and two large deck hatches, (and this boat has three cowl vents too) which are there to give good ventilation such as in Florida and Caribbean (for which this boat was designed). I think this is an important feature for hot weather cruising locations. Not many cruisers of this size have as many opening portlights.

The galley is better than on some boats. There is a full size nav table. The head is nice size. The Endeavours typically had teak parquet floor or sole panels.

Noteworthy on the Endeavour boats is the extensive use of teak wood in the interior. It is better than on many other boats of this age.
_____________

Condition of This Boat?

I have looked at many Endeavour 37 boats online, and this one appears to be in much better than average condition (from the photos). It looks clean and well kept. The interior and exterior appears to be in very good condition compared to others of this age. As with any online sale listing, we can only see what is shown in the photos, so, Buyer Beware always applies. But, after looking at so many of this particular model and similar age, I think this one looks very good.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Listed right at 30K: Here is a great ol' classic that went through a major refit (documented on the Columbia Owners Yahoo group) and is likely in excellent shape. I wish they had posted more shots and info on it on Craigslist because it really looks beautiful in the photos of the refit from the Columbia group:
http://www.hjboats.com/columbia38/index.html
Morgan design. Built strong, molded in keel, deep keel version. Research them here:

It recently was sailed up to AK. If you are in the PNW especially:

I am her 5th owner. Two of us took her down to Gulf of St. Lawrence along Quebec North Shore for a whales/icebergs watching trip in June. And, we’re back home safely. She has proven her value as both a weekender and a solid coastal cruiser through the years. Unfortunately, I won't have time to look after her next year, gotta find her a new home for 2017.
The boat is currently located in Kingston, ON

Asking $12300, price negotiable
Will trade for Cameras/Cine lens (Hasselblad, Leica, Zeiss…) of equivalent value.
Any insights or tips? Although a little smaller below deck than I'd like, she looks to be in great shape and I just messaged the seller.

Hi Mate, I owned a 28ft Roberts Spray years ago, a lot were/are home
built, seems mostly in steel. They have a reputation of being a safe seaworthy design, though quite a slow boat with poor upwind ability,
but will get you there safely. Being very beamy, its said they can hold
a lot of sail in stronger winds while others are reefing down. Some rough
home built Steel Sprays I've seen I wouldn't touch, then again I've seen
some beautifully built examples, they have quite volumeous interiors so make great liveaboards. People seem to love them, or hate them.
Hope this helps. Go in Low first off with any offer, as they have a more limited market compared to some boats, This is IMO.
