I have long admired the Maple Leaf boats. In some ways I consider them a "dream boat" for someone who dreams of living aboard a big sailboat. They are roomy. They typically have lots of headroom, spacious cabins and saloons. They often have a very nice galley. Big boats with lots of room and lots of deck.

They are typically a Center Cockpit boat, and I like that they have a hard dodger.

When I saw this boat, at this asking price, my first thought was: "WOW! That is a lot of boat for that price."

Then I looked at the equipment list. It seems to have a lot of desirable gear.

This boat owner wrote that this boat has an unusual layout (galley is forward of the mast). I encountered a similar layout on a 100 foot yacht I boarded this summer.

I agree.

Of course every old boat takes money to refit. But this is a boat I would look at seriously as it has a lot to offer.

Thanks for posting the link to the sister ship in San Diego. It has some nice interior photos.
I have seen several Maple Leaf's that had nice interior finishing (wood interiors). Very "warm and cozy" looking styling.

The aft cockpit also looks like it would great if the owner liked to fish.

I just would not want to get pooped. Needs good draining scuppers.

I like the Maple Leaf boats.

This particular boat (HPEER posted link above) is Asking Price $39,900 and the ad says it needs work.

It may be just the thing for a family looking for a big live aboard boat. It has numerous berths in the cabins and a nice private aft Master cabin. I also like the forward cabin. Nice!

Long ago, when I wore a younger man's shoes, I was charter captain of a local maple leaf 48. And yes, it was a beautiful boat. DREAMSEND (Toronto) was owned by the late Larry Solway, a local radio celebrity best known for his cameo in the Bill Murray classic "Meatballs". He bought the boat new, and sailed with his family, doing trips down the US east coast. But eventually started chartering the boat (crewed) on Lake Ontario. He kept sailing the boat long after we parted ways. The maple leaf 48 is a well built and spacious boat that is a pleasure to sail.

Thanks for bringing those up. I found both and took a look at both. See photos I just posted of the Peterson.

My Opinion:

The Peterson 43 looks like it has potential for someone who does not mind the more spartan interior and lack of light inside that is typical of a boat built for racing. The aluminum hull may be appealing to some.

The Columbia 45 (a design I have profiled here in this thread before), appears neglected and in need of work (and that is hinted at in the ad). It looks like it would need a lot of updating. As has been said before about any boat that is old, it can be a money pit because so much needs to be replaced.

I agree with both of your assessments on those two vessels I mentioned. I figured the list prices are obo on both ; and if a family was in need of a larger older boat the motorsailer might fit their curent budget. They could add in sweat equity as they went along and their kitty funds were available.

The aluminum one could also be refitted to someone's budget. But there is a whole lot of truth in the bigger the boat the bigger one's budget needs to be.

The Peterson is very similar to my own boat. They sail very well, but there is a fair bit of work and money turning them into a cruiser. Definitely not for everybody, and the twitchy inline rig is an issue.

Hi all,
Came across this thread and thought I would throw out this opportunity FREE Hans Christian 38T 1976. My father inlaw has been removed from his boat due to dementia, he did a single handed circumnavigation SV Mika (book - Islands Oceans & Dreams) and gave up when he got back. We cleaned out lots of old crap and the boat could be a project but I already have mine. It is located at Ventura Harbor, California. I have a scrap guy said he would take it for the lead keel but hate to dispose of the boat in that fashion, has quite a few sails in storage, plus on boat, was told Isuzu diesel runs, has fleming wind vane.
