Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
A nice boat I love the stern. Keep an eye out on Craigslist for a trailer.

Also eBay, even aluminum in a 7000# can be found for 3-5 grand, sometimes in immaculate condition.
Mostly between GA and FL too.

A lot of Valiant 40 owners let the exterior teak go grey and take good care of it. This looks like an example of that. I don’t see any real red flags, but pictures always make a boat look better than it is. The sole looks a bit rough, and there are various possible causes of that, but that’s about it
The real issue will be the engine and the fuel tank. Repowering a Valiant 40 can be extremely expensive due to the side entry and aft cabin. Depending on the engine in her (Valiant used several during the course of production) some cabinetry surgery may be required. And since you have to pull the engine to get to the fuel tank...
I’ve seen worse looking examples of 70’s Valiants go for substantially more. I’ll leave it at that.

I looked at a V40 recently and considered what it would take to replace the fuel tank ( the smell of raw diesel was pretty strong). Even removing the engine it didn't seem like the tank was going to fit through the engine room door or the companionway. Would the tank have to be cut up to get it out? Perry got so much right about that design but the tank's size and location really seem like a design snafu. Multiple smaller tanks make a lot more sense to me, ideally under the settees.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
You make a very good point. I clicked on a few links and the pictures were no longer available because the boat was already sold. I am very interested in this thread, because 30k is my budget for my first boat. Honestly, if I find a boat that is even less, all the better. Even if the boat is already sold, it does give a person new to cruising what the possibilities are for when it is time to make that first purchase.
My view is this: Photos of boats need to be shown here on CF.
Why?
Because once the boats on YW are sold, which can happen quickly in some cases, those photos disappear with the ad, once that boat is sold, if just a link to YW was posted here on CF.
When the photos are shared here, they are visible longer, indefinitely.
Therefore, a person new to cruising can look at this thread and learn something from the examples previously posted, even if those same boats are not for sale today.
I think that is a very important fundamental difference.
And that is why I don’t just post a link and nothing more.[/QUOTE]

Whisper is for sale. This Spencer 35 was commissioned for a circumnavigation by Hal and Margaret Roth in 1966. This is the original sloop they sailed around the world while writing about each adventure. Please email for information or a viewing. She sails smoothly and sleeps six comfortably. If your interested in a bomber sailing vessel to live aboard and make your own, Whisper could be for you. Price negotiable.

Let's keep this thread focused on the BEST examples found on the market today.
They may be old boats, but they should be in EXEMPLARY Very Good condition, in order to show others how the better maintained boats can look, and still be Less Than $30K.

I have a V40 that had its tank replaced with a plastic one, leaving the three year old engine still in place.
As far as I can tell from the old invoices they removed the cockpit floor and replaced it after the job, not that big an issue.
People around here often cut up the cockpit floor to replace an engine and put it back as a “ soft hatch”
Interestingly, the old tank started to leak in the med, and they converted the starboard water tank to a fuel tank to bring the boat home to Australia.
Fortunately they cleaned the water tank out after the new fuel tank was put in.
