But, I suggest posting that kind of request in the "Boats for Sale & Wanted" forum here on this site instead. Post as a "Boat Wanted" and I bet you will get responses.

I think those types of requests tend to draw all kinds of responses, which may derail some of what happens in this thread.

Also I think members who want to sell their boat would be more likely to view that forum and see your request, and respond too.

So, my suggestion is to post there (the other forum) rather than here when looking for a particular type or model of boat or when open to a wide range of boats, etc.
I agree, that's just now what this thread is about. For someone looking for a specific brand or model of boat I suggest doing a search on Yachtworld and then saving it so that you are posted when one comes up.

I noticed the boat was listed at $35,000 in August 2017. The Asking Price has been reduced to $28K now.
I'm pretty sure this is the same Dickerson that was for sale when we started our boat search. At that time it was listed with a broker for a bit more. When we called on it, he told us that the boat had suffered damage and a bulkhead would need to be re tabbed but I forget which side now as it's been a bit.

Re: TARTAN 37, 1980 @ $17,000

Here on Yachworld:
1980 Tartan 37 C/B Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

It is difficult to find a bad opinion about this model.

What do you think?

It's listed on Yachtworld which means a broker is involved. Any broker would know that 17k is way below the average asking price of a Tartan 37. There is something wrong with that boat that isn't disclosed in the listing.

Re: TARTAN 37, 1980 @ $17,000

The "magic" phrase:
"...she needs some work and this is reflected in the asking price."
= broker speak for you'll be paying for her twice - at least.
Shows no, zero, not one update on an almost-40 y.o. boat; running rigging looks extremely tired and poorly care for, no modern instruments at all, Alcohol stove, Non-self tailers on the mast (v. old school), etc.
Owner's ill health: how long neglected?

And it could be priced exactly right. Meaning not a bargain, a fair price for what you're getting.
If good structurally, you could add exactly the bits and pieces you want, instruments, a few more st winches and running lines aft, galley, re-rigging (figure on standing rig, too) maybe get away with some used sails, and a goodly amount of your time, and have a nice boat. Only inspection will tell. This will very much appeal to some people.

Sometimes just the sight of the original cushion keeps me away from the boat !

If it's structurally sound, sails & engine etc, and you want to add just the gizmos and window dressing **you** want, would have changed anyway, could be perfect.

But that's a big if.

Then one would have to suspect the owner is hiding more if they fail to mention the bulkhead in their listing.

I had our 14 salon cushions done last year in dark green Sunbrella for about a grand.

You may find a difference in size, number of cushions, and cost between a Scout 30 and a Catalina 400, just as there is a remarkable difference in costs of rigging, sails, bottom jobs, yadayada.

Insofar as buying your own and doing it yourself, yes, if that's what floats your boat. Some people love doing that and feel their time is worth the experience gained. Rock on, enjoy.

There are far more people who naively think or are sold the idea that a fixer upper boat is as good a deal as fixer upper houses. This is where I'm coming from in my comments. Time, money, or quality: Pick any two.
