Valiant 40 Pilot House

_____________

Steady's Notes

I like Pilot House boats. But some more than others. This one does have an inside steering position (shown in photos below), but I do wonder about the visibility from that position.

The sale ad linked below has much detailed information about the boat and gear. It includes an almost new Bimini, Solar Panels over the Bimini, and an Arch at the stern.

Anyone considering buying a Valiant 40 should do some research on the boat model. The Valiant was a popular boat design, and much has been written about them. As with any boat "Caveat Emptor!"
______________

Specifications

LOA = 40'
Year =
Location = Kemah Texas (near Houston)

Asking Price = Price reduced 8/30/17 to $25,000

This is the lowest price I have ever seen for a Valiant 40.

Was previously listed at $35K

My Disclaimers and A Few Requests

I have no financial or other connection to this boat or the seller.
I have not seen this boat in person, nor have I sailed on it.
As with any boat, it is a good idea to research the design to learn about how they sail, common problems and owner opinions.
As with any boat, it is smart to have a qualified yacht surveyor perform a survey of the boat to assess its condition.
I am posting this to help others find boats. This one caught my eye, and I hope this thread helps others find a good fit for them.
I hope this thread proves helpful to CF Members. If so, let me know, as it is nice to know the time spent on it has helped others.
IF you purchase this boat, let me know (a PM would be OK).
IF you purchase this boat, I would enjoy seeing it, or going for a sail on it, if I am ever in your area. Or, if you own a similar or sister boat send me a PM. I enjoy sailing on a wide variety of boats and would like to get some time on many designs, including this one.

Good luck on your boat hunt!

Hello, everyone,
Between 1976 and 1981, fire retardant additives were added to the epoxy resin used in the manufacture of Valiant 40's. Most, but not all, of these boats developed blisters, in both the hull and the deck houses. So, with this boat (above), be very careful to not buy swiss cheese.

I know about one of these boats and they live with it's condition. He says about every 5 years he has to fix it again. The thinking is, you have a really super boat for not much money.

Aloha 32

32.5' Ouyang Boat Works Aloha 32
___________________________

Steady's Notes

This boat was listed before, but I see another new posting (October 2017) of the ad with an Asking Price of $25,000 with "Make me an offer."

The photos of the boat show a nice looking boat, in what appears to be good condition.

The seller is selling it with all of the cruising gear aboard. This is an extensive list, and includes RADAR, Windlass, Autopilot, SOLAR panel, Inverter, Honda Generator, arch, 8 foot dinghy with sail kit, SSB Transciever, dishes, tools, etc.

The Universal Diesel engine is relatively new (2014) with new transmission too (2017). (See ad for verification)

I like what I see in the photos. There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

This boat design has a bolt-on keel. The owner said in response to a question that the keel is "lead, bolted to lead."

The ad says the boat is on the ICW and moving. It also says the boat is on the hard in a Charleston marina. So, it is not clear where the boat is now. Contact the seller.

The Aloha 32 looks like a scaled down version of a Niagara 35. Both designs by Mark Ellis. They are decent sailors.

The listing states it has a 25 gallon diesel tank under the port settee. Engine hours are stated as 3125. No other engine information though.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

I sat this past weekend hiding behind the dodger, somewhat protected from 40 knot winds and rain. It was made a bit worse by looking across the marina at my parents' 36' Nautilus 36 Pilothouse, where one could sit comfortably and warm watching the waves of incoming storms.

The PH design makes a lot of sense in the Great Lakes. Not only the novelty of watching the nasty weather without being bottled up below decks, it extends the season comfortably.

Wife and I are in the market for a new old boat, and a PH design is high on the list. On a whim I checked YW for Nautilus 36, which typically are listed over $50,000 and lo and behold, there's one on Lake Ontario listing just over $30,000!!! I contacted the broker Greg Stratychuk of North South Nautical Group, who responded that night (at 9:30pm!!) He gave me the skinny on this boat; while the survey isn't comprehensive, it sounds like the boat is in good condition, and the owner is eager to sell- as obvious from the price.

Wife is inclined to want a larger PH for live-aboard, so sadly the wonderful Nautilus 36 is off the list. So if you want a solid built, well finished boat suited for comfort in cold weather, here it is:

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

https://norfolk.craigslist.org/boa/d...331551015.html

Can anyone provide some info on the above boat? I'm looking at buying my first sail boat and living on her while I fix it up a bit. I have found some information on the boat but can't seem to find too much.

Looking at getting some insight into the quality of the boat and the cost of the repairs listed.

Appreciate everyone's input.
