Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

[Unfortunately I am not quite in the position to buy yet.]

Yeah, I feel the same way sitting here in Japan saving and scrimping with only 2 years to go. I'm ready to jump.

To STEFFAN,

Thanks for adding a good profile of a boat, with the good data, many photos, and your own captions describing what you liked about it. Good post.

Like that pilothouse !!! Windvane steering. Tiller pilot. And lots of knotty pine below.

That is a nice looking Brent Boat.

I have looked at several of the Brent Boats over the years, and that is one of the best looking ones I have seen. They are usually owner built and finished, and that builder apparently took pride in his boat and the interior looks outstanding compared to most.

And, it appears well equipped (in the Brent Boat style) and in good condition and at a very good price too. I also like the pilot house.
_______________

Brent Swain Design Boats

For the readers of this thread who are NOT familiar with "Brent Boats" or the Brent Swain designed steel boats, I suggest you do some Google search for "Brent Swain" or "Origami boats" to learn more, prior to purchasing one. There have been several heated discussions on the Boatdesign.net forums about this designer and the boats.

In short, Brent Swain came up with a way of making a steel boat by monocoque construction (bending the steel plates and welding them and without any ribs or stringers normally used in steel boat construction). This method of building the hull relies on the strength of the material (steel plate) and the welds) in a way that is unusual for yacht design.

Most yachts (steel boats) are built using a traditional method of ribs and stringers to build a skeleton on which the plating is then affixed. In the Brent Swain design, the steel plate is bent (using simple methods) and shaped into curved pieces that are then fit and welded together to produce a shell-like monocoque hull. Critics say that means a weaker hull. However, I am not aware of any Brent Swain design boat sinking due to hull weakness or structural failure.

The design is controversial and not without criticism. In fact, the designer is criticized by some too, because he is not formally educated as a Naval Architect. Traditional boat building depends on making a structure with ribs and stringers, which involves cutting a lot of pieces and many welds. The Brent Swain design does away with that, making the assembly of the hull simpler. Despite criticism from some prominent naval architects (e.g. Robert Perry), the builders of these boats (generally the owners) swear by them, love them, and usually take pride in what they built using simple tools and methods.

Some of the Brent Swain designed boats have twin or bilge keels and if you look for photos online you can see them drying out in the tidal areas of the PNW. Some have a single keel.

Hope that helps.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Tartan 34

My first attempt at contributing to the Boats Under 30 K thread. I’m not a sailor, however I hope to be in the near future. This boat appealed to me initially because of the new Yanmar diesel, the new Awl-Grip on the deck and hull, and it is a fresh water boat which appeals to me though I’m not sure what the advantages, if any, are. I suspect that a fresh water environment is far more benign than salt water. Feedback on that is very much welcome. I’ve looked at all the pictures from the agents website; she’s spic and span inside and the cushions appear to be clean as well. There is also a tiller post ready for use aft of the helm. It is a Tartan and that carries some weight. Tartan joined the sailing world in 1960 with the introduction of the Tartan 27 and 57 years on Tartan is still a name to contend with.

• Year: 1969
Current Price: US$*26,900
• Located in Muskegon, MI
• Hull Material: Fiberglass
• Engine/Fuel Type: Single diesel
• YW# 33264-2613023
Torresen Marine

From the agents website: This highly successful cruiser/racer is a keel/centerboarder with a skeg hung rudder. Her 9' 3" cockpit provides for plenty of legroom. Inside is a teak trim interior. Sea Escape has been upgraded in 2004 with a complete Awl-Grip painting of the decks, cabin house and hull. There is a new diesel engine with only 32 hours. This boat has never been in salt water, never mind what the transom says. The owner wanted to go south but never did. She is a fresh water boat only. And forget about the year of the boat. Condition and equipment are everything. Come and see for yourself! This is a great cruising boat for those shallow areas of the Great Lakes or go offshore to the Bahamas. Do the Great Loop! It's time to escape - she is ready for all of these adventures!

[QUOTE=chile1;2388323]Tartan 34

One of the cleanest, nicest, and certainly least expensive T34's out there. Starting with an excellent pedigree, Olin Stephens designed Tartan 34's are consistently rated one of the best "good old boats" especially in the so-named magazine. Many have traveled the distance from their Great Lakes origin to the Caribbean, where the centerboard/keel shoal draft makes them very desirable. And a brand new engine? Holy Mackerel.

Nice one! To most folks I might be pointing out the obvious but since you are new to the game I'll mention it anyways: Olin Stephens is Part of the famous "Sparkman & Stephens" (S&S). The Tartan 37 is S&S design #2253. Awesome boats, mucho pedigree, great performance, beautiful looks, ...

And yeah, I'm biased owning a IW-31 (S&S #1899)

Tartan 37
______________

Steady's Notes

1. The Tartan 37 is one of my favorite boats for this size and class. I like many things about it.

2. This boat model is one I may post a few times in this thread as I come across examples worth noting.

3. This particular boat (linked below) has been reduced in price. I found it originally listed with an Asking Price of $45,000 on the Tartan owners' site.
Tartan 37 Sales Floor

It is now listed for just $27,500.

4. While this boat's ad photos show some stains on the settee cushions and I noticed the ad said some of the canvas needs replacement (Bimini, sail cover, dodger), those are things I would expect to replace or repair on most boats if the canvas is older.

5. There is a very good detailed review of this boat model found at Practical Sailor. https://www.practical-sailor.com/iss...7_11600-1.html

6. This is a Keel/Centerboard design with variable draft. With the board up, it is shallow draft of 4.17 feet.

7. Some of the photos shown below may be from sister boats.

This particular boat (linked below) is the BEST CONDITION Tartan 37 I have seen so far at this price level.
I just checked out the pics at Yachtworld. I have to agree with you, a very tempting, clean boat. Thanks for posting this.

I agree! This thread is great. It is very encouraging to think that you can find a high quality boat for about $30K.

Thanks Steady Hand!

I want to stay on this thread too.

Have a nice Tartan 30 with a diesel that will qualify for this thread after I cruise the Gulf Islands this summer.

Love those T37's on the east coast .....
