Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

A Union 36, looks to be a close relative to the Hans Christian. Spotted her at sailboatlistings on the way over here. So much charm, wouldn't you say ? And a cutter rig, clean engine.

The interior is beautiful on this one. Well to me it is. The boat i can only describe as a beast !!

The owner appears to portray the ad honestly, listing the work needed. No teak decks on this one.

Beneteau First 456

A Beneteau First 456 from 1983, with low hours on the engine at 29,000 usd. Seems to good to be true, and probably is.

I would be extremely wary about this one. But hey, if there is someone on a budget, needing a bigger boat, it might work. Anyone in SXM that wants to go check it out?

One thing I know I dislike about the First 456 is the fact it is a Cruiser/Racer, with a lot of emphasis on the racing portion. It is a classic CR German Frers design from the 80s. It's a tough boat to singlehand, with big sails and big everything. It's a good fast boat. But she demands work. For that price, if it's not a complete disaster, might be perfect for someone.

This is my buddy's boat. He purchased it new in 1972. It looks like it's just off the showroom floor. It has been from Ohio to South America and back.

Looks like a nice boat. One tip though, when I'm looking for a boat I always get a bit suspicious when the pictures in the listing are more than a few months old. In this case I'm sure it's because of the weather where the boat is but it does raise a bit of doubt in my mind when I see that.

Good to see a nice looking boat finds a new owner.

I hope they enjoy that boat, as I thought it looked very nice (regardless of price). It is different from the usual.
__________

TO ALL: It is nice to know when someone finds a boat through this thread. So, if anyone does purchase one, let us know.

I am sure everyone who is posting a boat here to share a good find will enjoy knowing their post helped another sailor.

__________

TO ALL: Please remember to post something about the boats you see, more than just a link.

At the very minimum tell us the model, year, and price.
Beyond that, tell us the location, and what YOU saw in the boat that makes you think it is a good buy.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

I bought my sailboat for $7500 off of craigslist. The systems all needed updating, but the bones and engine are solid. Been updating it a little at a time for the last 3 months that I have been living on it. I sailed it from long island sound to Portsmouth nh in December after outfitting it enough to safely make the trip.

Its a standfast 33 (which is 32 ft long, go figure)

Re: the Beachcomber- I taught an acquanintace to sail on this boat and it was easy to sail and would do so in really shallow water. Just two things

1. If memory serves, it had nowhere near 6' of head room

2 . Most of the bearings for the rotating masts were shot and needed replacement.

3 Otherwise a good boat, but not for offshore. Too tender

It's a Presto hull which is a modified soft chine Sharpie. At 25' on deck with only a 15" draft it's a great gunkholer but designed for work offshore. It has a large pop top that gives standing headroom up to the head & v birth. There are no actual bearings for the masts. They're actually flag poles stuck in fiberglass tubes so you have to grease the masts where they rub at the top of the tubes. They rotate easily for a couple of weeks after greasing but then start binding again, especially if your not luffing or there's a strong wind pushing on the mast. It's an interesting idea but didn't work that well in practice.

An Albin Vega 27. The owner's description leads one to believe that the maintenance has been kept up quite well. A 10hp Westerbeke diesel.

Sheesh! That is one nice Vega. Keto is gonna go nuts trying to figure out how to truck that boat across the country. That boat is light enough and small enough that with a $3k heavy duty tandem axle flat bed trailer with 5000lb axles and a cradle it could be towed behind a big pick-up, but sea-worthy enough that it can also handle most that you find when you get there. I say flat bed because the trailer is still useable for other things when the boat is in the water. Not a bad combo for someone who wants to explore far-away cooastlines without having to sail the boat there.
